I believe in change. I have changed. In fact, if people did not want to change I would be out of a job. I help people change in my role as therapist.
I have had the privilege of witnessing amazing changes that people create in order to have better lives or heal their pain. My study of brain science has been limited so I welcomed the opportunity to read Healing Your Mind, Rewire Your Brain by expert Patt Lind-Kyle to achieve a better understanding of how the brain works in helping us change.
For the in-depth reader, who easily reads through mounds of well-written detail, this book provides much of what you wanted to know about the brain in a well written style. However, the casual reader may find the detail overwhelming. But all readers can sort through this well organized book from an expert to access the information they seek on brain science, meditation, and other mental skills to create positive change in their lives.
Lind-Kyle describes the differences between the four brain waves, beta, alpha, theta, and delta. She presents written exercises and instructions on how to alter them to achieve a healthier mental state. Also available is a two-CD set of guided meditations read by the author. Each CD contains three 20-minute meditations which correspond to sections of the book. I found the first meditation on the second CD most useful for me.
My favorite section of this book is the fourth chapter, "Training the Mind." Here I discovered the nine enneagram personality types and how this knowledge can be applied in mind training. The author believes that the enneagram is a very useful tool that helps people understand the personality system, "which is actually a set of conditioned experiences working together as parts of the mechanism." Included is a website for the Enneagram Institute, where you can take a free sample assessment. Lynd-Kyle works with her own clients using the Enneagram as a part of her mind training work.
