Book Review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is out!

As lame as the title seems, if we translated it into BM, it will read Harry Potter dan Putera Setengah Darah... someone must have sucked the prince's blood.

And the Malay readers will start saying it's a vampire book. Proclaimed "HARAM" book. And there is this book destroying and intoxicating the young readers mind to believe in the existence of witches and wizards.

This book is pretty good. It is worthy of the long 2 years wait (for fans of Harry Potter like me). This book is much much much better than the old Order of the Phoenix! Order of the Phoenix was a total crap. It is one of the worst stories I have ever read. Not to mention that it is very long (the book is 700 pages) just to finish the damn book.

But again I think that the title of 'Half-Blood Prince' sucks! There is not much related to the prince at all. And Voldemort did not appear at all.

This time the book brings the reader through less heroism of Harry, and it is more CSI-Miami like. It guides the readers slowly and reveals the secret for... it's a secret!

Also in this story, a character is dead. Killed by the (Half-Blood Prince). I just don't want to spoil the reader on the storyline — you gotta read the book!

I am never a great fan of Harry cause he is just some stupid young guy with lots and lots of guts. No brains at all.

But Dumbledore is totally adorable! I would hope to say that the next and the 7th and Final book will bring us the death of Voldemort and an end to the Harry Potter series. Ya indeed, I hate the idea of who died instead.

I am surprised by your disdain for Harry Potter (the character). Throughout the series he has shown determination, pluck, and intelligence. Yes, he is "a young guy with lots and lots of guts" as you so eloquently point out, but there is much more to him.

[edited spoiler] you are already spoiling it for any of us who haven't read the book yet. At least you didn't reveal the identity of the Half Blood Prince. Some of us want to read the book and find out.

Victor, I'm sorry this made it through the editing process with a major spoiler intact. The article has now been edited to remove that spoiler.

Uh, wait a minute. Someone must have done a MAJOR edit job. I just read this and the only thing about Dumbledore is "totally adorable". Character killed by Half Blood Prince.

    Dumbledore is dead
Voldomort has four more live left, plus the one he already has.
The boy (harry) can only love.
I think Ms. Rowling has to kill the dark lord herself.

This review sucked big time! I do not know where to start! Half Blood Prince is I believe, the appropriate title for this book. Harry depends on the half-blood prince for so many crucial things throughout the book and there have been scores of people waiting in queues at midnight on 16th just to know the identity of the prince!
So how can you ever say that titled 'sucked'?

Was diappointed in book. The love connection between Ron and Hermione is overplayed. We've been reading about it since book 3. Either they snog or they don't, but give it a freaking rest, JK! Harry's character is much better than the Order, he's stopped being a pissy brat, and is now, fairly likable. The best character, Dumbledore, has lost his power, as the book portrays him as flailing, even before drinking the liquid. Too many plot holes, too much fluff with the teenage relationship crap! Am huge fan of the series, but am glad it's drawing to an end.

Who ever wrote this book review needs to get out of the business of writing reviews because it sucks. Maybe you need to go back and read the book again. Because you sure missed the point of why they named the book half blooded prince. By reading this review I'm sure you were a huge fan of Rambo. Maybe you should stick to the basic shoot them dead heroic books. Your imagination for adverture is limited to these kinds of books.

Personally I think the love stories were very interesting. They provided some comical relief from all the evil things going on in Hogwarts as well as the rest of the magical world.

On top of it all, these characters are indeed 16 years old, thus doing what 16 year olds would be doing. Deal with it, J.K.Rowling is simply potraying the truth about teenagers.

Althought I am a little annoyed by the amount of time it takes for Ron and Hermione to get it on. I mean 3 books down and they're still not doing anything...lets go! hurry it up!

The book was definitely preparation for the last book. very enlightening.... but i agree with one of the comments, it has flaws and a bit passive also inconsistent to other books like Hermione suddenly being mediocre to pave to Harry’s new found keenness.. To sum it up, though, still acceptable. but i would just like to share my view regarding snape... there are evidences that support what he did was dumblebore's bidding. there are: hagrid overheard snape and AB arguing about snape being over worked and didn’t want to do something anymore. my view here, he didn't want to kill him even should the circumstance ask for it; the hatred on Snape's face when he was about to kill because he didn't want to do it; Dumbledore to beg? Not so likely he’s not even afraid to die… my interpretation, he was begging to Snape do as it; Snape has knowledge of AB's quests for horcruxes for he helped him to counter the curse when he dealt with the ring. Snape was still teaching harry to do nonverbal and close his mind, though not in a nice manner, but still inspite of the situation, when he was about to escape. i still believe he just did what AB told him to do should the situation ask for it to save Draco, himself and help Harry to be a better person as well as to make Harry realized his final task.

I am the reviewer of this book. Harry Potter is indeed..... made of guts only....
He has no brains..... but he has lots of help and luck.....
I do not think Snape is helping Dumbledore to pretend that he is dead. So that Voldemort can spring to action.

I believe that Dumbledore is dead for sure. And Snape is on the Dark Lord side.

The next book will be very thick with plots. Expect Harry to act alone. As you have noticed. Dumbledore is the only wise guy who knows it all. Other characters acts under his orders and decisions. The Order has no leader now.

Harry alone cannot destroy the Dark Lord as he does not have the brains. And of course, we are very sure, that The Dark Lord is much much knowledgable, and smarter than the Potter boy.

Great reveals in the next book will be.... who is going to act as the new leader of the Order? Brave, guts and power alone cannot solve problems. The brains and wiseness of the leader is the most important factor. Who is the new leader? Who is the one who destroyed Voldemort hocrux?

As the plot tickens, I am afraid Harry Potter guts alone cannot save the wizarding world.

    To Janine,

You don't understand the importance of a good story. The book does not relate much to the Half Blood Prince. It should be named " The Secrets of the Dark Lord"
As this title is more relevant. Janine, you should stop giving comments. You adore Harry too much. And please remember that Rowling's writing style is not that excellent. It is her imagination of an extraordinary story that excite us.

I think the review sucked. a lot. jkr's novels are good and you made it seem like everything is just crap. well, first of all, what's wrong with the title? jkr gives the title of the intrigue. the half-blood prince is very important - if there wasn't for him and the whole potions stuff, harry would have never found out about voldemort's secret. dumbledore wouldn't have died and nothing would've happened. second of all, in this kind of books, there has to be a bit of romance, to please all readers. many want to read about their love life. and harry may be just a young guy with lots and lots of guts and no brains at all, but that's how the main hero of this kind of books is supposed to be. Harry is the typical hero. all in all, it was a pleasant book. and i also liket OOTP, i found it very good.

I think this review is suck to no end. You can't just debate about the title, I mean, come on, it's just title!! It's up to thewriter what kind of title she want to make. it's her work, after all.

If you feel you're smarter than JK Rowling, dear reviewer, then I suggest you try to write SOMETHING as famous and good as Harry Potter first before you start to critic JK Rowling's-er-book's title.

If you ever write, you'll understand that it's not easy to open up your mind and write it in paper. Especially thinking about reactions you'll get from people who read it. you have to have much braveness to show it to other people.

but nooo, you made it as if it's children's work. As if everyone can make story like JK Rowling, and it's just a piece of cake to write stories which are acceptable by people in many coountries. And JUST IMAGINATION? How many people outside there can set their mind to have SUCH IMAGINATION? I'm not sure that it's an easy task to Imagine somehtinng, sorting it, and make it into good plot. not everyone THAT creative, you know.

Have you realize how hurting your words can be to some people? You shouldn't write like that. It's not good to hurt anothers, say, harry's fans. If you don't like him, fine, but please be careful with your mouth-er-finger. You're hurting his fans, you know?

I think Harry is just a teenage boy, and come on, how many boys outside there can act and think so wise since childhood. Harry never been educated well before, never has the chance to sort and let out his emotion freely like some of us(with uncle and auntie like that, he must burried it deep down) so you just see the last product of it, a boy who still so young and in the way to grab his wisedom. Unlike you and me and some other poeple, he has no friend before. And it's understandable at the end, when he can let his emotion out, he doesn't kknow how to control it. No one ever taught him or show him the right way( Dursley's family's way are certainly bad,ne)

and you know that people grow older and wiser by their experience throughout life.

Nobody's perfect, so do you, me, and JK Rowling.Again, if you don't like her way of telling stories, don't read it. You don't have to tell another bad things about this or about that, we can decide what's good for ourselves. What will you get by telling bad things about this book and hurting others who really like it? Even if you're right, you're still wrong in communicating it with others. Please be careful next time.

you say harry has lot of guts, now I wonder if you ever realize that your way of reviewing resembling harry's? it's as if you say "yelling is bad!" but you say it with screaming...so there's no different between you and harry at the end. Please consider my words carefully. I just don't like some poeple who can hurt others without realizing it.

    Woah,
I only just finished reading it... and it was quite good. Although I have some mixed feelings about it... but quite good nonetheless.

Yeah, I really have to add that I can't really rate the book until I've read the final one, because a lot of stuff happened here that would be interpreted as pretty spectacular, or even pretty lame, depending on how it ties in to the final book.

All in all, it had everything I'd always loved about the Harry Potter book series: the adventure, the mystery, the suspense, the comedy (u-no-poo), and it even had some romance in it (for the girly girl fans I guess), and most importantly, the horror (that chapter about the retrieval of the horcrux was simply spine-chilling). Solid book! Very solid indeed!

i have just started to read the book. i have been waiting a very long time to get the book without having to buy it to see if it is worth even buying so far i have gotten through the first chapter. seems really kind of weird though. i have really always liked the harry potter books i have seen all the movies and they are some of the best movies that i have ever seen.they are so very detailed and barley even leave any part of the books out so many interesting creatures and words.so well J.K. ROWLING you are such a very tallented writer so when you are finished with the seventh book do you have any kinds of plans to start a series with the grown up harry potter? if so i wish you the best of luck you really amaze every one with every book that you come out with. just one important question in the front of the book you dedicate your book to your daughter is that whom harry potter really came to life is in your daughter? well thanks victor

I think most of you are wrong most of you give up way to easily .... I think the book was great but I would like to see J.K. Rowling write about Harry's after life to like if he becomes a teacher at Hogwarts, Oh and Harry and Harmione. Oh and some fan that guy is up at the top.

i think that none of the above statements clearly explains to the people who are reading this the true story of harry potter yes he has guts but in order to use it he needs to have brains to so who ever said he has guts only and not brain refrain that..and the JK always has a reason for her titles or she could just rite harry potter 1 2 and so on... No offence to none

Dumbledore's dead but he can still live in the portrait like the previous headmasters so he should still be able to lead the Order right? So in a way he is still living,I wonder if that puts J.K.Rowling in dielemma. They say she had already planned all the 7 books before starting to write the series but i don't think so, if that was true why did it get messed up so bad?
The way sirius dies in the fifth book was really funny, dumass was teasing the witch instead of attacking" na na u missed" and the next second he is dead. What a foolish way to die.The fight scene at the end of the 6th book between the death eaters and the order didn't really make sense to me, its beyond my perception why those guys were hexing each other instead of throwing curses.I found the felix potion absurd, how can a potion control fate? What if two people on two different quidditch teams drink the pottion before a the match which team would win?I think God would get confused.Regarding malay readers who consider harry potter haram, convert to other religions morons u are insulting Islam, doesn't say in the Quran that Harry Potter is haram.
