Book Review: Eyes to See by Joseph Nassise

When I recently heard about Joseph Nassise's Jeremiah Hunt Chronicles urban fantasy series, it was news to me. Somehow I'd managed to miss the series entirely when it began in 2011. And rather than dive into the second book (King of the Dead out this month), I decided to grab a copy of the first book--Eyes to See--to get started. Five hours later, I was done. It's been a while since a book has grabbed me so quickly, but Nassise did it in record time.

Jeremiah Hunt is blind, but he sees ghosts. He didn't always, but when your child disappears and you've tried all the normal channels of investigation, sometimes you have to explore the unusual ones. Eyes to See tells the story of a desperate father willing to go down the road less traveled to find his daughter. As you might already know, those roads are usually less traveled for a reason.

Though Hunt hasn't given up on his daughter, he has to pay the bills, so he uses his new ability to help others. Whether you call it exorcism or ghost hunting, he can sometimes convince ghosts to leave a place. And occasionally that ability even comes in handy with the police, helping with the odd case now and then.

And he even finds help along the way, crossing paths with a witch who sees Hunt in visions and a mysterious Russian man who runs an Irish pub. Can they help him find his daughter when the police have failed?

As a father, Hunt's anguish over losing his daughter really hit home. With two daughters of my own, the thought of losing either is scary enough, but offered an instant bond to this man willing to do anything to find his. And when you add in the urban fantasy elements--ghosts, witches, berserkers, and worse--Nassise really had me at hello.

If you're looking for a new writer in urban fantasy to read alongside Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid, Eyes to See offers a dark world and a story I found impossible to put down.
