Book Review: Dark Lover by J.R. Ward

A few months ago I read Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward and I was told that it was the weakest of her Black Dagger Brotherhood series. So I picked up Dark Lover the first in the series with the intention of starting at the beginning and working my way through the rest of the series.

Wrath is the only pure blood vampire left on the planet, he also happens to be king of his species though he would prefer not to be. He has lived hundreds of years in a bitter haze, tormented by a past that he can do nothing to change. He leads the Black Dagger Brotherhood, an elite group of vampires who protect the rest of the species from the Lessers, a group led by the dreaded Omega who have sworn to kill all vampires.

Beth is a normal kind of girl who grew up in an orphanage. Working for the local paper she keeps to herself, sharing her apartment with her cat Boo. She’s nosey and is good at what she does but there isn’t a man in her life nor does she want one. Of course when we are introduced to her she is just about to discover that her father, a man she never met, is a vampire.

Beth’s father asks Wrath to step in and take care of Beth as she discovers her family history and goes through a change that will take her from human to vampire. At first Wrath refuses out of selfishness but when he meets Beth he realizes that she is the one woman who could change everything for him. The two are drawn together by an undeniable attraction, something they both fight at first. Beth also refuses to believe that vampires could be real and it takes Wrath some time to convince her of he truth.

I did the same as you did, read Unbound first before reading the others in order. And i have to agree with you. It does add to read them i order since no story is bound to one book.

I read enshrined first and had to get all the others.Read them in order then. Found them all totally absorbing and the Characters( Males in particular) Well drawn and I really got involved in their stories. She writes in a way that draws the reader into the relationships between the brothers and the deep feelings and care they share for each other. There is much that is dark in these books but also a wry humour in the interactions between the males that leavens the mixture. I frequently chuckled aloud at Butch and V and this same pair also provoked a tear or two. Also of course very erotic reading, compelling sex scenes and tender romance too. What more could you ask for. ANOTHER BOOK of course.

J.R. Ward is one of my favorite authors. Her books have awesome characters that are extremely hot, and the storyline is really good. Books have many hilarious moments and once you start reading you can't put it down.
