“The City of San Francisco is being stalked by a huge, shaved vampire cat named Chet and only I, Abby Normal, emergency back-up mistress of the Greater Bay Area night, and my manga-haired love monkey, Foo Dog, stand between the ravenous monster and a bloody massacre of the general public. Which isn’t, like, as bad as it sounds, because the general public kind of suck ass.”
Before I start I must tell you that I love anything Christopher Moore. I discovered his books about 15 years ago when Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story was published and I was introduced to the crazy urban world of the great vampire lovers Tommy and Jody and their Goth girl sidekick Abby Normal, a.k.a. Allison Green.
Moore continued their story with You Suck: A Love Story where Abby meets her boyfriend Brian “Foo Dog” Wong who is a computer tech genius and ends up bronzing Tommy and Jody so that they won’t break up. And now we have the third installment, Bite Me: A Love Story in which we watch Abby and Foo Dog try to protect humanity from Chet the shaved vampire cat and from the very old ship of vampires who have come to take over the city.
To assist them we have police inspectors Cavuto and Rivera, Marvin the big red cadaver dog, the Animals (night stock crew from the Marina Safeway who also hunt vampires and invented frozen turkey bowling), the homeless Emperor of the streets, the freed from bronze-age Tommy and Jody, and Okata the aging Japanese artist and swordsman. In a book as fast paced and crazy as it sounds we watch as Abby and her friends manage to save the world of humans from things that really do go bump in the night using UV laser flashlights, light jackets, holy water, swords, and Super Soakers full of Grandma Lee’s special Vampire Cat Remedy.
Once again Moore turns the vampire genre on its ear and gives us a laugh out loud novel that is fun for the whole twisted family.
