Book Review: Auld Lang Syne by John A. Vikara

Part of: Reviews in Brief

In Auld Lang Syne, author John A. Vikara presents a different kind of scrooge-like life-changing revelation story. It begins with Jimmy. Jimmy sits in his house by himself, homebound by his emphysema, while his wife hits the road to visit their son and grandkids in New Jersey as a snow blizzard is approaching on New Year’s Eve.

Jimmy sits home alone in the evening twilight waiting for his wife, Gwen, to come back home or at least call him. He worries himself sick as the blizzard interrupts, on and off, the phone lines, hoping for a phone call from Gwen to get through. Suddenly, he hears a familiar voice and it isn’t Gwen’s…

The story takes the reader through a few ghosts from Jimmy’s past, who take Jimmy on a trip to memory lane, but these ghosts have their own agenda and it’s not to change Jimmy’s outlook of life. I found Vikara’s writing simple and easy to read. He did a great job keeping my attention just by his character development, as I refused to put down this story which takes place basically in one room until the end, as I wanted to know what would happen next.

Auld Lang Syne by John A.Vikara is a novella that will keep the reader guessing. I enjoyed reading it and recommend it to those who like light ghost stories, and those who enjoy character driven plots. I give it four stars!
