Book Review: A Cat Like That by Wendy Wahman

Part of: Reviews in Brief

“Wow! That’s a beautiful book!” exclaimed my three-year old daughter when she gazed upon the imagery of A Cat Like That, after I had opened the package I had received in the mail. Indeed, the colorful naive imagery of the book speaks to children and parents alike. And the story is about a cat, so it was bound to please my daughter.

A Cat Like That is a beautiful little guide for children on how to treat their little four-legged friend, highlighting the specificities of the cat’s behavior and their likes and dislikes. The story is told by a cat, looking for the best friend in the world, and conjuring up all the qualities he’d like this friend to possess. The story is presented in a fun and airy way, without turning to a moralistic or finger-pointing tone.

”I’d pick a friend by rubbing and purring. I’d send a kiss with my eyes by blinking slowly...
and hope I got one back.”

If your child is a bit hard-handed with the family cat, or you want to prepare him for the arrival of a feline house guest, A Cat Like That may just be the book for you. A little artistic gem for all the cat and animal loving little ones. This book has swiftly found its way to our nightstand, where it waits to be read and reread over and over again!

A Cat Like That is written and illustrated by Wendy Wahman, author of the book Don’t Lick the Dog. The book is published by Henry Holt Books for Young Readers, part of the Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group.
