Book Review: 152 of the World's Most Beautiful Songs by Alfred Music Publishing

Any selection of the world's most beautiful songs has got to be subjective, but Alfred Music Publishing certainly does provide 152 good candidates in 152 of the World's Most Beautiful Songs , all beautifully arranged and with lyrics and guitar tabs as well as piano music for vocal and accompaniment.

One admirable thing about the collection is the variety, as is usually the case with Alfred Music Publishing's collections. Of course, you get the standards here, like "As Time Goes By," "At Last," "Moonlight Serenade," and so on, but you also get more recent songs, such as "Hey There Delilah" and Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here."

There are songs from the movies, like "Beauty and the Beast" and "A Dream is A Wish Your Heart Makes"; folk tunes such as "Danny Boy," "Blowin' in the Wind," and "Puff the Magic Dragon"; and pop standards like "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "A Change is Gonna Come," and "Faithfully."

Whether you are looking for Cole Porter ("I Get a Kick Out of You," "Night and Day,") or other songs by crooners and big bands like "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" and "Body and Soul," or songs from the '60s and '70s such as "Both Sides Now," "Danny's Song," and "Desperado," you will find them here.

There are even gospel songs in the collection, including "Just a Closer Walk With Thee,'' and "(There'll Be) Peace in the Valley."

In fact, from "All I Have to Do is Dream" to "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart," the only criteria for these songs was that they had to be beautiful in their own way, and they are.

This giant collection will keep you playing and enjoying your time at the keyboard for a long time to come. It will provide great music for family gatherings, weddings, parties, and other events, or just for a quiet evening at the piano alone. The arrangements are challenging enough to be interesting, but not so hard as to frustrate the intermediate player.

Any keyboard player will be happy to add this volume to their collection.
