Big Sister Babysitter - I'm going to be a WHAT? ! features a fourth grader, Lake Ashley Payton (also known as LA) and her blended family, who live on a peaceful island. One day LA is told that her mother is going to have a baby. This news rattles her world, but she uses a video diary and Bible verses to help her through.
How did you come to write this book?
One day in 2008, on a beautiful sunny July day in Washington, I took a long walk along a community of Bonney Lake, called Sky Island. As I walked, I prayed out loud to God for my broken heart and life. I prayed for Him to steer me because all my years of chasing after the next bigger and better thing wasn't working for me. I surrendered right then and there, "I trust you Lord. Tell me how I can serve you and live a more honoring life."
Despite the gorgeous landscape and strange looks from people as they passed me, I continued to pray with tears drenching my face. Then I heard, "Go. Go. Lead them. Be the best mother you can be to all my children."
Within a month, I found out I was pregnant with my second child and I thought that was what God was referring to. Due to unforeseen work issues, my husband and I decided it was a good time for me to stay home and take care of the kids. I have been working every day of my life since I was 14 years old, sometimes multiple jobs, in addition to going to school. Suddenly, I was in a position where I had a daughter in school and a baby taking long naps during the day.
On the morning of a crisp sunny fall day with a touch of cabin fever, I sat on our back patio with a cup of coffee, a notebook and pen. Feeling light and peaceful, I started to write about the sun warming my back and the next thing I realized is I had written 20-plus pages and a rough version of I'm Going to be a WHAT?! was born. I laughed saying, "Last time I wrote any sort of a story, it was in the 10th grade and my English teacher gave me an F."
