You Never Know is a novel written by Lilian Duval. The catchy subtitle “Tales of Tobias, an Accidental Lottery Winner” sets the stage for the main theme of this story: the role of money and whether or not wealth can cure all problems.

The story focuses on Tobias Hillyer. Having lost both of his parents in an automobile accident, we first meet 20-year-old Tobias as a selfless individual who becomes caretaker for his younger brain-injured brother, who was also in the accident with his parents. From there, we travel with Tobias for more than 30 years of his life.

Playing the New Jersey lottery only one time, Tobias wins the big prize – hundreds of millions of dollars! As unbelievable as it seems, Ms. Duval makes us believe in this possibility through her excellent story crafting. Who hasn’t dreamed of unbelievable amounts of money and what we could do if we had it?

Ms. Duval is a survivor of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. Having lived in New Jersey and worked in New York City, she writes with knowledge and accuracy as well as a flowing style. Even though the book is over 300 pages, it is a quick read.

If you enjoy getting inside a story, you will enjoy this book. You Never Know will take you for a ride. Exploding myths about money, fame, and wealth, Lilian Duval crafts an excellent story that will remain with you even after you’ve finished reading the book. This is a book you will want to read again, just to enjoy Ms. Duval’s style. Her first novel, I am looking forward to more from Lilian Duval!
