Pam and Nicky Lintott, those gurus of quilts using Moda jelly rolls, have outdone themselves with this latest title. There are 18 original quilts in pairs throughout Two From One Jelly Roll Quilts. Each pair (or chapter) uses one jelly roll, those fabulous Moda sets of fabric that include 40 2 1/2 inch strips, pre-cut and ready to sew. Each chapter also includes tips on how to choose the fabric and how to split the set of fabric strips, as well as all the details of additional fabric required to finish each quilt. The layout is clear and easy to follow with plenty of diagrams and photos of beautiful quilts.
Some designs are quite traditional like “Square Dance” and “Strip the Willow”. The tiny squares of the “Square Dance” look quite tricky but in fact are easily achieved with the careful strip piecing and cutting. The other half of the jelly roll is used for “Strip the Willow” with its alternating wide and narrow strips creating a very different and simpler quilt.
Other designs are quite modern like the “Sailing Boats Quilt”. Here the strips are used to create the triangular sails of 15 boats which are interspersed with the rest of the bright blocks. A great quilt for a little boy – and boy quilts can be hard to find!
The most unique pair of quilts would be “Teddy Bears” and “Loving Hearts.” Here a mix of muted tones are cleverly cut and pieced to create a baby quilt with four teddy bears, as well as a lap quilt covered in soft pink and brown hearts.
Aside from the beautiful quilts with full instructions, this book covers all the basics of patchwork and quilting in quite a lot of detail. Even a beginner could make these with the wealth of information provided in the General Techniques section. A more experienced quilter will appreciate the quilting suggestions, and the table providing fabric requirements is not using a pre-cut jelly roll, so they can create their own from their fabric stash.
