In The Journey to Pentecost, author Dr. Carolyn Starling-Matthews tells the story, through her eyes, of her mother’s journey to find God and peace. Mary Harris Moore, the author’s mother, has always been spiritual and has always tried to live a life that was guided by that. As a young child the author learned about God’s love through her mother’s talks and mentoring in the community.

The author was born in the hills of West Virginia and it was there she first saw what the love of God could do. In these times families relied on other families for support, mental health and learning about God. This is a true example of it takes a village to raise a child.

Each chapter discusses some of the ups and downs of living in the hills of West Virginia. At the end of each chapter the author asks questions about unique experiences – death, love and spirituality – where the reader can write down answers to the questions.

The book is very thought-provoking and often asks readers to challenge their beliefs. Dr. Starling-Matthews does not judge nor does she make one feel bad about how they feel; she just tells her story hoping that some of what she has learned and practiced for years will give some hope and perhaps new direction.

The Journey to Pentecost by Dr. Carolyn Starling-Matthews is easy to read and understand and is very well written. Throughout the book there are scriptures that relate to each trip of the journey. Even if one is not spiritual, it still can give guidance on how to live a happy successful life regardless of what one’s career or environment is.
