Healthy Programmer

The Healthy Programmer is an important book for all people, especially those who are sedentary. In fact, it is a book that everyone should read because it will save your life. No one of us can afford not to read this book, given its importance.

Joe Kutner’s book will guide you from an achy, unhealthy, and grumpy sedentary programmer to a happy and productive individual. Although this book is geared towards programmers, it is for everyone who lives a sedentary lifestyle and especially for those who sit all day at desks. After reading Kutner’s book, you will learn how to live a healthier, painless, and wholesome life by making small changes in your daily routines that are doable and which will yield wonderful results in no time.

This is not a diet book. However, it is a book that will help you lose weight if this is your goal. The main goal of the book is to inspire and motivate each individual to be healthier and more vibrant with more energy. To become healthier, we have to move more and eat nutritious foods—eliminating fats and eating 5 fruits and veggies along with protein every day. To move more, Kutner suggests that we sit for no more than 20 minutes at a time and then shift positions. Every hour, we should exercise (such as walk or do circuit training) for 5 minutes. If that sounds simple, it is. It takes that little to improve our health.

The hardest thing for individuals to do is to change habits. We are so resistant to doing so. But to be healthy, we must change our sedentary habits and lifestyle to more healthy and active ones where we are active self-managers. We can take charge of our health, one small step at a time. Kutner outlines it for all of us. All we have to do is follow it.

With more and more people becoming obese every year, we have to do something to reverse this trend. And we could all start with ourselves. Most of our obesity can be blamed on the fact that we’re always sitting all day and that we eat a deplorably bad diet that is loaded with salt, sugar, and fat. This trend is destroying our health and it giving us a low quality of life. So, we must take control of our lives and get onto a new path of health and well-being.

This book will change your life. It is not often that I say this about a book and there are few books that sit in this category for me. However, this book fits this calibre. It is books like this that make me grateful for being a professional book reviewer.

    Excellent article! I can attest to the worth of a daily exercise program combined with your software duties. I started programming for a big company in 1963 and I was already a tennis player and bicyclist, so I was pleased to discover a marsh on the bay within a 3 minute drive of the office. I took every lunch hour to go for a vigorous hike on the paths of that marsh. We moved office a couple times, and I always found a way to combine exercise with work. Once we were downtown so I combined bicycle commuting for a hour each way, 2 or 3 times a week, with lunch hour hikes around town. Once we were in a suburb so I put the bike in the back of the car and every lunch hour rode out of town to the mountains and up and down some foothills. I always found some way to exercise, sometimes playing tennis at lunchtime, and never had a management problem.

    I found that by slicing the day in half at lunchtime that I wasted less time with aimless wandering in codespace. I could divide up a project into 3 hour pieces and allocate them out. And it worked very well when I was managing projects, too, since I could plot a matrix on the blackboard with each piece and it’s progress.

    Now I’m 76, retired and in excellent health. Meanwhile, most of my old colleagues have been dieing off for the past 20 years.

    Do it! Just make it a habit.
