Looking for a job? Thinking of starting a new career? Did you just graduate college and you’re looking for some solid advice on job searching? A new book called The Bigs by Ben Carpenter may have a few secrets and suggestions on how to choose a career, find and do a great job, become a leader, maybe start a business, manage your money and live a happy life.
Actually all of those things are included as part of the subtitle for the book. The book covers a lot of ground and is a multi-tasking type of read.
Carpenter writes, “The Bigs is unique. It is not a memoir. It is not a how-to book. It is not a self-help book, and it is not a collection of entertaining war stories from the front lines of commerce. Instead, it’s all of these. Also, it’s all true.”
The book is named after that phrase, “Welcome to the big leagues.” Carpenter selected the title because, “When you become responsible for yourself, and you are being paid to do a job, you are in the big leagues.”
He starts in the first chapter describing his “first time at bat” and his entering into the corporate world starting in the world of finance. He goes through the rest of his career in the remainder of the book leading up to suggestions on how to effectively manage one’s finances.
The book is a result of offering his daughter a list of bullet points for her to follow in her new job. The list turned into a full-fledged kind of a self-help book where the author has hit another home run in his life as a big leaguer in the publishing world.
One of the interesting things about this book is that the author uses many stories from his professional life while not mentioning names. Instead he calls people ‘the head,” ‘superman,’ ‘the professor’ and ‘the cowboy’ just to name a few.
The author also provides a number of bulleted and numbered lists of tips and suggestions. For example, he offers a “Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a Great Job.” There are lists of interview questions and a list of things to say during an interview among others.
All in all, it’s a good read for those just entering the job market. For those more seasoned job searchers, career changers or those thinking of becoming an entrepreneur there are some applicable lessons learned from Carpenter’s story.
One miner downfall of the book is that I think he tried to cover too much in one book. He may have served his readers better with two books, which would allow him to speak more expertly to specific audiences.
Carpenter provides his readers with a pretty lengthy bio in the front section of the book. He starts with information about going to junior high school, then high school, his parents, and his nickname ‘Benjer.’ The author relates how moving from community to community and having to adjust to being the new kid affected his life.
The rest of the book is about his professional career and how it progressed over the years. Most of the information and tips he provides is directly related to his personal and professional lives. The book is pretty much autobiographical.
The author has led an interesting life, and while his name is not as common in many reader’s minds as someone like Donald Trump for example, he does offer a story that is interesting with many resulting lessons learned.[amazon asin=1118917022&template=iframe image&chan=default] Powered by Sidelines
