Rubber stamping is one of the first paper crafts that I learned and it has remained one of my favorites. Rubber stamping can encompass so many different things because you can stamp not only paper but also wood, glass, rock, fabric and a variety of other materials. The technique can be used to create note cards, to stencil a border on the wall or door, or to create fun patterns on clothes or home decor.

Making an Impression Designing and Creating Artful Stamps takes rubber stamping to the next level by explaining how to create your own hand-carved stamps. This is an area that I haven’t explored before. In the past, I have purchased the stamps I wanted from the craft store, which is rather limiting. Making an Impression Designing and Creating Artful Stamps showcases work by Geninne Zlatkis, who is known for her beautiful illustration work and her love of nature and color.

The author explains technique specific primers for hand-carved stamps, simple painting and inking, collage, etc. Projects include 20 different beautiful and creative projects such as cards, embellished journal and tote, and decorative wall pieces. She emphasizes using her projects as a starting point to generate ideas for your own stamps and designs.

Making an Impression Designing and Creating Artful Stamps begins with an introduction to stamping basics for those who are not familiar with stamping or creating your own stamps. You will learn all about the tools and materials you’ll need as well as the necessary techniques. I also found it interesting that she includes stitching techniques to use along with her stamped designs as an accent.

Making an Impression: Designing & Creating Artful Stamps is broken down into three main sections: stamping on paper, stamping on fabric, and stamping on other materials. There is also a section in the back that has more than 50 motifs that you can copy directly to use for image transfer, stamp designs, and collage materials.

Each section of the book has a gallery that showcases different types of projects you can create with each stamp.

I found this book to be a wonderful introduction to make your own artful stamps and projects that use them. The techniques are explained very well with step by step instructions and photographs and even as a beginner, I had no problems following along.
