Let me say that Life of Love for Atema and Atepa by Dedeth Ford is a true love story. I am torn between three and half stars and four. The love story itself is very touching without any doubt. Overall, I would have found the book more engaging had there been more of a story to go along with the most important parts of the love letters. Although reading the details of every letter sent back and forth from Colorado to the Philippines was difficult to read, I did find myself compelled to see what happens as Patrick and Dedeth planned for their first meeting. There are a lot of people who may feel like engaging in a truly long-distance, romantic relationship as Patrick and Dedeth would not be worth the risk. As I read the letters, I could see how honest and straightforward they were with one another making the love story became more real.
This relationship was more than an honest attempt to get to know someone; they were both forthright about their desires and intentions long term. Being honest and respectful was the groundwork these two lovers built their relationship on. You realize something happened during that letter writing between these two people that made them jump the hurdles they had to go through to have that deeply-anticipated first kiss and loving embrace as they plan for Patrick’s arrival. The story is full on in telling what one might expect from planning for a wedding in an unfamiliar culture in a country on the opposite side of the world. There were things going on worldwide that should have deterred these two from traveling, but their love seemed to grow instead as they moved on full-speed ahead! Read Life of Love for Atema and Atepa if you want to know more! I did!
