Many of us in the conservative movement look at what’s going on today in America with the constant expansion of government, rising debt, and bailouts; and it just doesn’t seem like what America is supposed to be about. It appears to us that our current state of affairs is at odds with the principles this nation was founded upon. But for those of us who want to begin examining what we are in light of what we should be, there’s a book that gives us a clear and succinct glimpse into the minds of America’s Founding Fathers.

Liberty vs. Power by Timothy Johnson is a volume that will put you on the right track to understanding the founding principles of our nation. It’s clear, easy to read, and very concise. In fact, it’s less than 100 pages.

Johnson, a history professor at Lipscomb University, gives a brief look at the events that led up to the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Along with this, he expounds on many of the principles, thinking and logic behind our founding documents.

In addition to the history of our founding fathers and the prevailing wisdom of their day, Johnson offers insight into other topics such as slavery, George Washington’s response to the prospect of power, and the importance of virtue in American society.

At the conclusion of the book, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are featured as an appendix, along with quotes from prominent American leaders concerning freedom and liberty.

All in all, Liberty vs. Power is a short read that provides an informative and challenging look into the minds of our founding fathers. I would highly recommend it to any American who is concerned with the direction this country is going in.
