Dr. Shapiro’s Getting Past Your Past is a must read for everyone who has suffered past traumas and who are bringing each of these experiences into their everyday lives. Everyone seems to be influenced by past tragedies or omissions in some way. And some of these past negative experiences have forced some individuals to react in negative and sometimes toxic ways in their present lives.

However, these past negative experiences are infecting our present experiences and making us repeat unhealthy patterns of acting and behaving. Our negative emotions, behaviour, beliefs and sensations can usually be tracked back to some unprocessed memories from the past. This is one way that the past stays present. These negative thoughts and emotions can be transformed, lowering our distress and increasing our confidence and comfort. We can all do this through EMDR for ourselves or with the help of a therapist.

Dr. Shapiro’s book is about understanding the why in our lives and in those around us. It is about understanding who we are, and learning what can be done about our pain and negative automatic reactions. The reader will become aware how to open all the blocks which have hindered to happiness and well-being. By using Dr. Shapiro’s EMDR techniques, the reader will be able to decide how to make the best choices in the future.

None of us have to be trapped and stifled by our past. We could move past the traumas we experienced in our family of origin. We must simply want to or seek a counsellor to help us out. Dr. Shapiro makes EMDR easily understood and accessible to everyone. What a great and encouraging book by one of the leading experts in EMDR techniques.
