Full Steam Ahead: Unleash the Power of Vision In Your Work and Your Life by Kenneth Blanchard, Jesse Lyn Stoner and Patrick Lencioni is an important work on setting forth an overall direction for a company’s future operations, strategic direction and the road map for achieving goals that merit attainment.

The basic elements of the book include the team vision, refocus, what’s next and having passion for the business. The purpose addresses an organization’s reason for existing. Part of this task is to identify what business you are really in.

According to the authors, one of the most important aspects of the journey into the future is to inspire excitement for the commitment. In addition, it’s necessary for an organization to set forth the end result or overall goal so that stakes and the required effort can be understood and implemented more easily.

The authors also stress the importance of having clear values, an honest approach to things, a respect for expertise, transparency and accountability. The book discusses the deployment of creative tension in an organization in order to discover new options, unanticipated problems, unwarranted assumptions and a crystalization of what the future might possibly hold for the company and industry.

The authors set forth ways to refine the team vision by brainstorming, small group encounters and eliciting input by distributing detailed questionnaires to poll opinion within the entity, The most important thing to articulate is the vision and the roadmap for instilling specific paths, goal measurement, congruency and milestone attainment to key stakeholders in the organization.

Full Steam Ahead is an important advance in strategic management of a business entity. The acquisition of this resource will benefit an organization, the industry itself and strategic constituencies like the government, investors and customers.
