If you always wondered about what goes on behind the scenes of political campaigns, this book is for you. Bridget Siegel details the personal and political complexities of running a campaign and how difficult it is to pull off a success one.
Some people thrive on this kind of work, as did Olivia Greenley, the main character in this novel. She always dreamt of having this kind of job — and it finally came her way! It’s also nice when the people around her are on friendly terms. However, Olivia is forced to sacrifice her sleep, comfort, family, income for a year and friends to support someone who she initially believes will make the world a better place. But will this person really turn out to be as good as she initially thought?
Olivia highlights the chaos and corruption that can result from political campaigns. She is forced to keep secrets even from her best friends, something that she seems to be very uncomfortable doing. After a while, she can’t believe the secret life she has to lead just to survive the campaign. Is it worth losing this much dignity over a political campaign? And then when she least expects it, the person who she is supporting turns out not to be the kind of person she expected to be supporting. An affair ensues right in the middle of the campaign, and everyone has to try and hide it.
This is a riveting novel written by an author who has worked on many political campaigns and has seen it all first hand. She has worked on campaigns at the local, state, and national levels. She knows all the ins and outs of campaigns, and so this book came from that factual base, mixed in with a few unique spicy details. I don’t usually like books about politics. But I must say that this book kept me glued to the pages until I read the whole book.
