The premise of Death in the 12th House: Where Neptune Rules by Mitchell Scott Lewis goes like this: Freddie Finger, an aging rock lead singer for Rocket Fire is found murdered in a vacant house. His daughter, Vivian Younger, hires David Lowell to catch the killer. Lowell is an astrologer who often works with the New York Police Department to help solve crimes. During the course of the investigation, he comes up with a list of prospects: Finger’s two ex-wives, band members, his manager, and a musician whose life and career Finger destroyed. With the help of his staff, Lowell turns to the charts to give him information on the suspects and to identify the killer.

The plot unravels at an easy pace without cliff-hangers or intense surprises; yet, it keeps the reader wanting to know more without getting bored. The characters are fully developed with clarity and distinction. Each character is brought in at the appropriate time and introduced to the plot in an effective way. Lewis gives a definite visual during the whole story by his ability of placing the reader on the scene.

As a lay person not completely understanding astrology, I found the addition of it to the story very interesting. Lewis brought in the aspects without burdening or overwhelming those like me; yet, I’m sure astrology buffs would read this book on a deeper level because of their knowledge.

Death in the 12th House: Where Neptune Rules by Mitchell Scott Lewis is an intelligently written piece of work, and I enjoyed the craftsmanship brought out by Lewis. I wholeheartedly recommend this book, whether you understand astrology or not, because the bottom line is that this is a good read.
