Jill Mansell, one of Britain's most-loved contemporary authors, makes her U.S. debut with this month's release of An Offer You Can't Refuse. The story centers on Lola who, as a teenager, accepted a somewhat large bribe from her boyfriend’s mother. All she had to do was dump said boyfriend – and dump him she did.
Ten years have passed since the incident occurred and Lola has no idea what became of her old flame, but she's never forgotten him. When she runs into him one day, all of her old feelings for him come rushing back. Doug, however, isn't so excited to see her. All he knows is that one day they were in love and the next she had turned her back on him and walked away.
Lola knows she can't tell Doug the truth; how could he ever forgive her? So, she'll have to come up with a plan that will win him back. She knows it won't be easy, but she'll do whatever it takes.
This story was so much fun to read. There are additional plot lines running throughout the book, which, instead of pulling you away from the main characters, actually enhance the book and make it shine. The crazy roommates across the hall were favorites of mine. There's nothing better than a romantic book with multiple relationships developing to give it depth and drama.
Mansell's witty writing will win readers over quickly. The European setting made it feel even more like an escape from real life. It had all the components I look for in contemporary fiction: quirky characters, a unique plot, and a great ending.
The next U.S. release from Mansell will be in June when her novel, Miranda's Big Mistake will hit shelves. I happy to say I can't wait to read another book by this author.
