Body Artists at the National Arts Club

I personally have some strong philosophical and aesthetic reservations about using the body as a canvas, but that’s just me, and I can certainly distinguish between greater and lesser skill and creativity in body art.

Apparently, so can the National Arts Club, which is welcoming ArtFusion into its august bosom tomorrow, October 6:

The National Arts Club, one of the country’s oldest and most respected art societies, will celebrate the fine art of tattoo by hosting a demonstration of ArtFusion Experiment on Wednesday, October 6 at the historic Tilden Mansion, Mia Reed, CEO and co-founder, Tattoo Artist Group, Inc., announced today.

Four of the world’s most creative and innovative Tattoo Artists, Paul Booth, Guy Aitchison and Filip and Titine Leu, will perform a live ArtFusion Experiment, a collaborative art demonstration they pioneered, in a gallery setting for the first time in the United States. They will each employ their unique style to create unique original works of art both on and off the skin. The exhibition will take place from 6 PM to 9 PM at the club’s Gramercy Park headquarters. The event, sponsored by H2Ocean, Inc., Jagermeister, RBC Entertainment and Tattoo Artist Group, is open to the public. Admission is free.

In addition to the live performance, select pieces of work created by past participants of ArtFusion Experiment will be exhibited at the National Arts Club throughout October.

“This is a landmark event for the fine art of tattoo and the renowned artists collaborating in ArtFusion Experiment,” said Reed. “Up until now, only a relatively few have been exposed to the exquisite work of these great artists. That’s about to change, and we have the National Arts Club to thank for that.”

ArtFusion Experiment was originally developed by Booth, Aitchison and Filip Leu. Their discovery of art “fusion” was gained through their individual experiences with collaborative tattooing. They realized the collaborative effort could be conveyed in all mediums, especially on canvas utilizing acrylics or on paper with charcoal and pastels. Each of the approximately 300 tattoo artists representing over 30 countries gather annually to create some of the most unique art of our time. See their work.

The National Arts Club is dedicated to furthering art and artists in America. They accomplish this by fostering educational programs and awards, while creating opportunities for artists to connect. Since the NAC was founded in 1893, its membership has included three presidents, and some of the most important artists and arts patrons in America.

I very much like the idea of these artists demonstrating their abilities on media other than skin, which is rather difficult to hang in a gallery.
