Iconic punk band Bad Brains has signed with a new label (Megaforce Records) and is currently in the process of recording their ninth studio album, and first in several years. This time however, they have another legendary musician to produce it — the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch.
The Bad Brains are widely considered one of the most important punk bands of all time and the originators of the east coast hardcore scene. They are also well known for fusing fast, aggressive punk music with dub heavy reggae to create a sound that has influenced a wide group of fans and other musicians.
The Bad Brains have seen somewhat of a revitalization lately with a few rare live shows and the release of the epic live DVD, Live At CBGB's 1982. This album and accompanying touring will not only expose the Bad Brains to fans they never had, but will also allow their younger fans an opportunity to finally see one of the world's best performing punk bands live. Furthermore, the personnel will include the classic lineup of HR on vocals, Dr. Know on guitar, Daryl Jenifer on bass, and Earl Hudson on drums.
Adding to the excitement is the fact that none other than Adam Yauch (aka MCA) will be producing the record. A long time fan and collaborator, Adam and the rest of the Beastie Boys have all cited Bad Brains as a major musical influence (remember that the Beastie Boys started out as a punk outfit). The two bands toured together in 1995, but this new (and yet to be named) album will mark the first collaboration between any of the members. Adam expressed his excitement in the press release: "The Brains are one of the most powerful and unique bands in the world. They have been a huge influence on me, and it was an honor to work with them on this record."
The release of the untitled album will coincide with several festival appearances this spring and a planned forthcoming worldwide tour.
