Announcement: Short-content feeds

Sunday, August 26, 2007, marks the switch of all Blogcritics.org article feeds from full-content to short-content. This is the result of several converging factors, and is unfortunately a permanent decision (as permanent as any decision can be on the web, that is). We are aware of all of the reasons that this is a Bad Idea, and we are aware that some of you will be quite upset about having to click on something to read the free content, and we're sorry. Unfortunately, despite great effort, full-content feeds are not currently economically viable.

Two other factors are involved: full-content feeds have resulted in an unprecedented level of content theft, with BC content appearing on many websites, usually spam sites, without attribution or permission. This duplicate content causes a cascading set of problems, not the least of which is that search engines generally aren't favorable to duplicate content, and don't always guess correctly. Finally, our RSS advertising partner is strongly in favor of short-content feeds.

We hope that you'll continue to subscribe to BC via RSS, and when an article grabs your eye, it's only a click away, still free on the BC website. Thank you for your understanding.

Yes, I went to see THAT MOVIE....

I am not a fan of Michael Moore but yes, I saw THAT FILM yesterday. I had no intention of seeing it until I observed a very strange phenomenon. Every show was selling out way in advanced and the type of people I saw that were buying tickets. Put that on top of the protester outside the theater and the fact that the Conservatives really wanted this film put out of commission, I decided to see for myself what was going on. I got my ticket for last night's 7:30 show at 10 am since all the ones before that one has been sold out.I go to the theater at 6:30. Already the line waiting for the 7:30 shows were of an unheard of length at the Century Landmark theater. They had the film playing on 4 out of 7 screens, each theater sold to capacity. In my particular theater, all of the wheelchair spots were also taken with wheelchairs. I was more interested in the crowd going and made a point to see the mix. You had whites, blacks, Latinos, Asians. There were more people in the 30-55 age bracket (which really surprised me as that I thought the theater was going to be full of college kids). You could tell there were a few conservatives in the theater- I happen to be sitting next to one who was heckling the movie under her breath and actually ended up walking out after about 20 mins. The ONLY person to walk out in the theater that I was viewing. There was laughter and applause frequently during the showing. There was two time that I was actually moved to tears myself. At the end of the show, there was standing and clapping in my theater. I had to use the toilet badly (too much cherry coke!) and made point to keep my ears open to the comments around me. For the most part the movie seemed really well received. People seem to understand that Moore was being selective in what he was showing and heavy handed in other points. All in all, the comments that I was overhearing didn't seem like the kind to come glassy eyed idiots. There were some who you could tell had swallowed hook line and sinker but that didn't seem to be the majority of the commentary.I was in no way prepared for what I saw as I walked out the theater. The lines to see the later shows of this movie were all lined up and I mean there were a ton of people. All kinds of people! Young, old, gay, straight... at this independent theater which doesn't ever seen this much business. I had never seen this many people at the Century Landmark Theater before. Then of course, you had a lone protester passing out flyers to everyone waiting in line telling them why the Moore movie was a lie.Notice, I was more interested in the people who were going to see this movie. But I can give a review of the movie too.Basically, yes it is preaching to the choir. Anyone who has been observing all of this since 2000 will already be familiar with the points that Moore raises. However, this film should appeal to the more bovine natured Americans who are too busy watching "Cops", "Extreme Makeovers", or some other reality TV and just have no time in their lives to watch the news or read. For these people the movie does a good job of featuring news reports that they may have missed. There are one or two points that the movie brings home very well- One being that the congressmen don't read every piece of legislation that comes on their desk. Ouch! Scary thought! One that I already knew but to have a congressman admit it on camera is not comforting. The other thing was some of the candid interviews with servicemen stationed in Iraq.Another good point: The fact that the number of troops that they sent to Afghanistan is less than the number of police in New York city.Would I suggest to see the movie? No, not if you make a habit of doing research and keeping in touch with American and world politics. If you really having been keeping up however, yes... I think that Michael Moore created a very entertaining, thought provoking, and relevant movie. He did do a very good job with this one. Is it fair and balanced? No- it never claims to be. Still, the facts that ARE brought up in the movie ARE FACTS. If you can discern when you are being spun or not, then this movie is excellent. If anything, I wish he had brought up even more points about some things but hey... no one wants to sit through a six hour movie. No, this does not make me a sudden fan of Michael Moore. He still pisses the hell out of me but I need to give him props where props are do. He did a good job for the most part with this film and for what its intent is, bravo. Well done.

Election 2004: Hitler vs. Kerry vs. Bush

Remember that MoveOn contest a few months back that asked for homemade for a political ad to run during the Super Bowl? Think back hard... The was around the time of "Nipplegate" and when everyone though Howard Dean was going to be the man.Well, there was a particular submission which featured Bush being compared to Hitler (which has happened many times during this past Administration's reign). There was a huge outcry- how dare anyone compare Bush to Hitler! How wrong it is for Bush to be compared to Hitler. How what were these people thinking?Well, MoveOn eventually took down the ad. Now keep in mind, MoveOn is an independent organization which is to get Bush out of office. Period.Well guess what...Hitler has come back again and you won't believe where. In an Official Ad Sponsored by Bush-Cheney for 2004.In this ad, they use a bit of the MoveOn.org's submission (that was yanked) that featured Hitler- Except in this ad, the Bush administration is comparing Kerry to Hitler.Personally, I find the whole damn thing funny. It is of course offensive to some. I can understand that. What I find so damn amusing is that Bush is feeling the heat so badly to go there- comparing Kerry to Hitler after all complaining about Bush being compared to Hitler in an independent submission to and independent political site that is just behind whomever can oust Bush- be it Kerry, Dean, or a Teletubbie. This was a bad choice on the part of the Bush campaign in my eyes. Not only does it show more hypocrisy on the part of Bush but its really taking the low road. Once again, MoveOn isn't funded nor supported by the Kerry campaign. In once case, it wasn't a cool ad to have, perhaps... but at least not of the candidates had made it nor endorsed it. In this case, the Bush-Cheney campaign made the ad and endorsed it.So, now Bush is comparing John Kerry to Hitler. Officially.A huh. Last time I checked, it was Bush who had the problems with prisoner abuse and people being held in prisons with no due process and no idea when they might be released. So, let's look at that Bush, Kerry, Hitler scenario again. Where do you find the most similarities?

And He's OUT! Ryan Drops From Illinois Senate Race

Of course, I am terribly amused by all of this- I won't lie. Not that he's had a chance of winning after all the problems that the GOP has been facing in Illinois due to corruption, scandals and under the table deals from the previous Governor Ryan. (To be fair... Mayor Daley who is a stout Democrat and is in charge of the City Of Chicago has his fair share of corruption going on. Still, I just can't take Chicago politics all that seriously. If you knew the cast of characters we have as aldermen, etc, you'd laugh too.)From MSNBC:

2:43 p.m. CDT June 25, 2004 - Republican Jack Ryan issued a statement Friday saying he was dropping out of the U.S. Senate race, four days after embarrassing sex club allegations in his divorce records became public. "It's clear to me that a vigorous debate on the issues most likely could not take place if I remain in the race," Ryan said in the statement. "What would take place, rather, is a brutal, scorched-earth campaign -- the kind of campaign that has turned off so many voters, the kind of politics I refuse to play," the statement read.
I find that statement totally funny because if you have been watching the news and papers in Illinois, its not the Democrats who have said a word about this. Its Ryan's own party which has given the choicest sound-bites. They were silent for only one day but since then, the screams for his head by Illinois GOPers are comical. Oh, and for all you people who think it was the Dems who went after Jack Ryan please note:The was the Chicago Tribune and WLS who sued to get the records releasedFinally, from MSNBC:

Democrat Barack Obama says he feels bad for his Republican opponent, who's been dogged by the sexual allegations relative to his 1999 divorce documents. In an interview with WLS Radio, Obama said Friday that what Jack Ryan has gone through is something he "wouldn't wish on anybody." Obama said he thinks its unfortunate that American politics "has gotten so personalized and cut throat." He says that makes it difficult for people to want to get into politics.
I do hope they have some sense and not but Oberweise on the ballot. I've seen him talk and his ads-He comes off as the most alarmist, pompous, dick. I can see where he is coming from with his stance on immigrants but his scare tactics are very distasteful.

Morrissey: "You Are The Quarry"

I have finished listening to Morrissey's new "You are the Quarry" and I have to say that I am impressed! I have always been a fan of The Smiths and Morrissey's solo endevours... with one caveat: I can only take it when I am in the mood or in small doses. Considering this is Morrissey's first release in several years, I can say that the timing is all right!Morrissey is still the brilliant lyricist and his tenor hasn't aged a day. The songs on this album are typical Morrissey fare, full of observations and deep brooding- still I would have to say that this release is the one that seems to probe the most deeply into Morressey the man. Many have panned this album saying that it is European egomaniac's trip into Anti-Americanism. This mostly refers to one of the song called "America Is Not the World". It's obvious that people who are making these claims have never heard the album or really listened to the lyrics and that this song illustrates Morrissey's love-hate with the United States (which he has made one of his homes these past years). In fact, this whole album is about his love-hate relationships, with the United States, with Britain, with himself. As I said before, I think this is the most that any of us has ever gotten to peek into his mind.On the musicality side of things, I can't say that this release is anything unusual. The usual arrangements that you have come to expect from a Morrissey release so no surprises there. In this case, I'm not sure that is a bad thing since this means that it doesn't sound like most the crap on the radio. All in all, a good realease... Not the best in the world but worth a listen and putting into your collection if you are a Smiths/Morrissey fan.Tek's Rating: ***

This Just In: Iran Goes After British Ships!

Well, in case you didn't think the world was unstable enough as it is, we get more signs of a potential world war:
Iran Confiscates U.K. Military Vessels
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer TEHRAN, Iran - Iran confiscated three British military vessels Monday and arrested eight armed crew members, state television reported. The three British ships entered Iranian territorial waters not far from the Iran-Iraq (news - web sites) border, the Arabic language Al-Alam television reported.
"Iranian forces confiscated the ships and eight military personnel on board," the report said.
The television report said crew members were carrying maps and weapons. It also said the ships were confiscated at about 11 a.m. between the Bahmanshir and Arvand rivers, which would put them in the Shatt-al-Arab waterway east of the Iraqi city of Faw. The broadcast gave no further details.
In London, the Ministry of Defense said it was investigating the report but did not know if it was true.
The ministry said there were no British warships operating in the Shatt-al-Arab waterway but some smaller vessels were there.
"We are assisting the Iraqi water police there so it may be one of those vessels," a spokesman said on condition of anonymity. "We don't know."
The Foreign Office said British diplomats in Tehran had been in contact with the Iranian government but it was still unclear what had happened.
Iranian-British relations have been strained in recent days, since London helped draft a resolution at the International Atomic Energy Agency's board of governors meeting last week in Vienna that rebuked Iran for past nuclear cover-ups. Iran accused Britain of caving in to U.S. pressure.
Once again, this has not been confirmed I suspect that I will hear shouts very soon from the Neo-Cons screaming that Iran should be nuked. My only thoughts are if the Bush Administration had not put the Arab World into the state that it is now, would this have happened just a year ago. There was a time when Iran was becoming more moderate and not holding daily US flag burnings. This is a very worrisome development if it pans out to be true.Anyone who thinks that we have any real allies left in the Middle East is a fool of epic proportions. If just two arabic states fall to islamic fundamentalism, the whole region is going to up like a flash fire and Israel will probably just start popping off nukes.Perhaps those wacko fudamentalist/evangelical Christians were right after all and Armageddon times are here.

Death

I know that a lot of people have issues with the posting of photos of the death and degradation in the middle east. Obviously, I am not one of those people. I think it is very important, no matter what side you stand to see exactly what is going on and what happens and then look in your heart and mind and come up with your own conclusions.I bring you the photos of Paul Johnson who was beheaded today. Due to the graphic nature of the pictures, I am placing them behind an LJ cut. Out of respect for the deceased, I am not going to use this post as a forum to promote my political views.

For more images of Americans mutilated, please look here. I made that post before I made my decision to not present political views when showing Americans who have been killed.

"He's doing a fabulous job and America's lucky to have him ..."

Rumsfeld Says U.S. Hid Iraqi Prisoner from Red Cross
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld acknowledged on Thursday that he ordered the secret detention of an Iraqi terrorism suspect held for more than seven months near Baghdad without notifying the Red Cross.Rumsfeld told reporters CIA Director George Tenet asked him last November "to take custody of an Iraqi national who was believed to be a high-ranking member of Ansar al-Islam," which the United States has called a terrorist group."And we did so. We were asked to not immediately register the individual (with the International Committee of the Red Cross). And we did that," Rumsfeld said at a Pentagon briefing hours after President Bush again voiced support for the beleaguered Pentagon chief. And the Cons were saying before how all the wrongs that have happened in Iraq aren't Rumsfeld (The Bush Administration)'s fault.
Assigning a prisoner number and notifying the Red Cross are required under the Geneva Conventions and other international humanitarian laws.***Rumsfeld said the man's case was unique, but he was vague when reporters asked whether the United States was holding other "ghost" prisoners without Red Cross knowledge in Iraq."He has been treated humanely. There's no implication of any problem. He was not at Abu Ghraib. He is not there now. He has never been there to my knowledge," Rumsfeld added, referring to the prison on the outskirts of Baghdad where U.S. soldiers abused Iraqi prisoners.
Rumsfield's quote only further proves how out of touch the Bush Administration is with not only the world outside of Hawkish Neo-Conservatism but also reality. I think that Sen. Joseph Biden (D., Del.) summed it up very succinctly:"There's a reason why we sign these treaties: to protect my son in the military. That's why we have these treaties, so when Americans are captured they are not tortured. That's the reason in case anybody forgets it."Unfortunately, these are not sins of omission but sins of commission. The Bush Administration very well knows that they breaking laws. They have constantly flaunted that they believe that they are above the law and that morals are something that can be conviently forgotten or twisted to fit themselves to their agenda. It doesn't matter if this has nothing to do with the abused Iraqi prisoners. Its wrong and it goes against the Geneva conventions.Bloody minded Neo-Cons will tell you that the Geneva Conventions no longer apply because they were written for a time long ago or because Al Qaeda and Osama won't abide by them, then they don't apply to the United States. The warbirds will say that we are at war for our very way of life.Exactly. Our way of life is supposed to be a more civilized, moral, thoughtful, and honest one. Americans like to think themselves as a Christian culture where hard work, honesty and responsibility will get you far. Americans want to be the ones that the world looks up to. The problem is that by forgetting what it means to follow rules, agreements, and to generally be humane, America finds that its name becomes more dirty and become more like the very thing they are fighting against. To fight the good fight is in fact to fight fairly, to be humane, and to still hold a level of compassion and understanding even when being spit upon. To go to the level of people who would kill innocents in the name of their crusades, to break laws only gives those who hate the United States more fuel for the fire.Considering the military power of the United States, to actually follow the Geneva Conventions would not in the grand scheme of things make the United States any less safe than she already is now. Showing a disregard for the rules of engagement only makes the United States less safe by alienating potential allies in the world community. If one's cause is just and conducted fairly and morally, in the long run, they are going win. People want to always side with the moral side, the good side, the "white and clean" side.
At the White House meeting, Bush voiced support for Rumsfeld when reporters asked whether he was disappointed in the decision to hide the suspect from the Red Cross."I'm never disappointed in my secretary of defense. He's doing a fabulous job and America's lucky to have him in the position he's in," Bush said.Wow. Just wow. Talk about being in denial, or being ignorant. I'm not sure which it is. I just know that these kinds of things being accepted and condoned by the leader of my country only puts me in more personal risk abroad. Since my own country cannot be expect to treat people fairly, how can I even hope for other to comply? Its no wonder why people hate the United States with such venom. Rumsfeld has made so many screw ups yet his resignation isn't being demanded. Instead he is being applauded and praised for deceit?I know that wasn't the American values I was taught in school.I read these things and it really does hurt me inside and makes me angry/sad/scared. Something needs to be done about the evil in the world- Both in the Middle East and in the White House.

erase me.

I remember when I first got started in MIS/IT, my mentor told me how working on systems required one to not only be technically savvy but to also act as a doctor/psychologist/social worker. There were times when one would be expected to have the decorum and confidentiality of the clergy, especially when it was actually the president of the company who opened up the piece of virus mail that brought the company to its knees for a few days. I thought at first he was full of it - until I got more experience. Now I have my fair share of comedic stories involving the stupid people do on PCs and the files that they have on hard drives. I've seen folders on corporate workstations labeled "NASTY SEX" which actually had boobage and money shots to make Ron Jeremy blush. (Why he didn't label that financial reports, I don't know... Shows the level of intelligence he was lacking). I've had a father ask me questions if because he had pictures of his 3 year old daughter naked in the bath, would he be busted for being a pedophile. I've hidden histories of porn sites being browsed from wives on laptops. I've been around the world because of my trade, met many people, been put in many scary as well as fun situations. I've seen the gamut of what my mentor told me that I would see. Or at least I thought I did.Until yesterday.

I have a client of mine who is in his early 80's. He's relatively computer literate for his age and has a passion for learning and technology. He's actually one of my older clients that I enjoy working with. He asks a lot of intelligent questions and really has a desire to remain "relevant". It makes me feel good to see the wonder and joy in his eyes when I teach him something really "neat" that he can do on his PC. I think I also enjoy him because he is a lot of like the grandfather I never had. He looks out for me and tries to think of ways for me to make money - though he buys into too many "get rich quick on the internet" schemes that I find the elderly fall prey too. Still, it seems that he has finally accepted my truth that the two guaranteed ways to make money on the net is porn and gambling. Still, he does drop me a mail here and there when he thinks there might be something I am interested in.Anyway, yesterday he took delivery of a brand new PC (much better than mine, I must say!) and needed me to transfer over things from his old monster and to also set up the DSL in his house. I drove out to the suburbs, not much on my mind besides a sexy dress I wanted and a pair of earrings that I would love to have and listening to the God-Awful B96 and "Confessions part II" by Usher (side note... why the hell a song about a dude who cheats on his girlfriend and knocks up some other chick and is begging to go back to "the one he loves" is so popular is beyond me. Kick that asshole OUT). I figured it was going to be an easy day. No more than 4 hours, give or take, just to explain usage on the new OS.I arrive at his beautiful, 1800's home in the suburbs and get to work setting up the new system and explaining everything to him. He also asks me to rebuild the old PC for his wife so that he can try to give her the "internet bug". I agree to do so and we finish up all the tasks at hand. As I am cleaning up, he leaves for a bit and comes back with another PC in his hands and tears in his eyes.I was aware of the fact that about 4 years ago, one of his daughters had died. I know that he currently had her dog which was a puppy then. I knew that daughter was older than I was but not by all that much - maybe 5 -6 years. I always figured that is why he had the affection for me as his computer tech. I never knew the situation surrounding her death - I had always assumed it was some sort of accident and I am not the one to pry. I believe that people will offer up to me as much information as they are willing to give.Anyway, here is my client with the PC and tears in his eyes. He asks me to completely erase the hard drive of the PC as that he and his wife had promised to donate it. I still wasn't too sure what was going on until he explained to me that this was the PC of his late daughter and that it was the last thing of hers that they had in the house besides the dog. It was then that he also told me that she had committed suicide.I was inwardly taken aback for a moment. Still, being professional, I asked him if he had already searched the HD and take off what he wanted. He told me no and that he and his wife did not wish for me to examine the hard drive nor save any data. I was to destroy all data and reformat the drive. He was in tears at this moment and I agreed to his wishes. At that point, he left the room as he could not be there as I took care of this remaining issue. As I set my things up to take care of this, it dawned on me there were no pictures of this "lost" child in the room. There seemed to be no mementos, no memories besides the fluffy white dog sleeping on the arm of the couch. I started to feel a little bad myself.I was not able to take care of the issue in the traditional manner as that there was a bit of hardware failure going on so I removed the HD and jacked it into another system so that I could format it that way. As I did this, I couldn't help but to bring up all of the last files and emails of this dead woman. I knew they had remained unread and untouched for these past 4 years. I saw all the documents and part of me wondered, "Perhaps I should somehow keep these... maybe he will change his mind. What if she didn't kill herself, what if it was foul play and the clues are here?"Then I looked around the room again and saw the absence of her life in that room. She had committed suicide. Perhaps she wanted attention. Perhaps she wanted to be forgotten. I didn't know as I wasn't a part of that chapter of that family's life. I looked again at the hard dive and all the documents and emails and heard in my mind:erase me.And I admit to getting tears in my eyes at that point myself. Here were the last vestiges of someone's life. The last little bits of unknown facts, figures, and messages. Here were her last secrets or not, left on a four year old hard drive - untouched, unexplored.erase me.And for a moment, once again I was tempted to try to transfer the data but I didn't have my own laptop with me. I almost felt as though I was destroying something important and should do something to carry on at least this digital legacy of someone's life. But then again, stronger now:erase me.It was what I was asked to do. I had been to this house many times before. It's not as if that PC didn't exist for me to take care of the times before. The decision had been made. My client was ready for this to come to a resolution. I was given a task and the trust to go through with it.I right clicked and "format".And the last bits of her life became scrambled and gone save from the most expensive of data recovery methods. And I felt horribly sad. I actually shed a few tears, a bit surprised that jaded, rough me would feel remorse at the ending of a life that was thrown away and never intersected mine until I was asked to eradicate a bit of data.I felt remorse that someone felt so incredibly bad about their life that they chose to end it. I felt hurt for her at that moment, to know that someone felt so at the end of her rope that she felt she could not continue. I felt hurt for her because, save for memories of which I had none, she ceased to exist in this home where there were no pictures of her. And now, by my hand she ceased to exist on a simple hard drive.erase me.And it was done. Gone. I replaced the hard drive and closed up the PC. I called to my client and told him that what he asked me to do was done and it was fine to get rid of the PC now. He looked a bit relieved and gently took the PC away. We settled up, had a a bit of a chat and I was on my way back home.As I drove home, I couldn't help but be stuck deep in thought. As I said, I don't know the circumstances surrounding her death. It's none of my business really. Still for a moment, I too grieve for her, for her sadness, for the pain of her family, and because I was reminded that I am very sensitive to people and life, as much as I like to say other people's pain/anger/ joy doesn't get to me...It does. It definitely does.erase me.Sorry, but I can't.
