Seether is one of those bands that just keeps getting better and better the more albums they produce. Virtually unheard of in America for their first few albums, this band who got its start in South Africa gained a strong foothold in the American mainstream market back in 2005 with its album, Karma and Effect. The swingy and crunchy single, “Remedy,” (an anti-drug anthem) rocked the airwaves for months after its release.

Then, there was “Broken,” a duet with Evanescence songstress Amy Lee that graced The Punisher soundtrack, which brought the band even more renown for their emotionally charged lyrics and haunting melodies. Their most recent album, Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces has turned out single after single, hit after hit, like “Fake It,” “Fmlyhm” (which stands for “F*ck me like you hate me), and “Rise Above This.”

Maybe with all of this great music out there, it was time for a greatest hits release to pay tribute to those who have followed the band since their early days and to help the rest of us who discovered Seether when they hit the U.S. airwaves. Now, putting together a greatest hits CD is one thing, doing it as an iTunes Original recording is another – a much better other.

Some of my favorite songs have been made impossibly better through the iTunes Originals series. These studio, live and often acoustic recordings offer new glimpses into the bands behind the music. In Seether’s case, the quartet went into Groovemaster Studios in Chicago this past May to lay down new arrangements of select repertoire, in addition to recording interviews that bring behind-the-scenes stories to light for the first time. It’s like having an album and podcast all in one.
