Those crazy Troubies (as the company members of Los Angeles Troubadour Theatre Company are called) are at it again. The Troubies are one of the most inventive and wacky theatre groups around.

Brilliantly led by Matt Walker, who is part clown, part classical actor, and part circus performer, they specialize in taking classic texts, often Shakespeare, and re-imagining them as musicals. Consider the titles Much A-Doobie Brothers About Nothing, OtELO, Twelfth Dog Night, and A Christmas Carol King, and you see what I mean. They have gathered quite a few admirers and usually sell out their shows soon after they are announced. Fans will not be disappointed with their latest, Alice In One-Hit–Wonderland 2: Through The Looking Glass.

The concept is to tell the classic children’s story using hits by groups that had only one or maybe two. Lewis Carroll and the Troubies are such an obvious match that the troupe had already done Alice In One-Hit Wonderland, and this is a sort of sequel using Through The Looking Glass as the starting point. For those who haven't seen the first part, they do a quick summation (with music) to start the show. The gimmick for the sequel is that the Alice of the first part becomes Alice the maid from The Brady Bunch. It's hilarious.

All the familiar Carroll characters are there: Humpty Dumpty, the Red and White Queens, the White Knight, Tweedledum and Tweetledee. It is hard to pick out favorites, but I was glad to see Lisa Valenzuela (Red Queen) back in the group. She has a powerhouse voice and is a terrific entertainer. Walker himself, bouncing on a huge inflated rubber tire, really cracked me up as the White Knight. But the whole cast was terrific, and I was glad to see Walker has added gymnastics back into the mix.

I don’t want to spoil the surprise by telling you the songs or artists parodied, because part of the pleasure is remembering and identifying what’s being sung. Besides Alice from The Brady Bunch, there were references to Alice Cooper, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, and Alice the television show.

If there are still tickets, go go go. Alice In One-Hit-Wonderland 2 is a real gem. At the Falcon Theatre until Oct 12, in repertory with As U2 Like it.
