DVD Review: The Batman - The Complete Fifth Season

The series The Batman had the unenviable task of following up the smash hit Batman: The Animated Series. Instead of trying to imitate the older series, The Batman went off in its own direction. For the first few seasons Batman was a solo act, and then viewers were introduced to Batgirl in season three, and Robin in season four. This was a unique take since Robin joined up with Batman before Batgirl ever did in the comics or any previous animated series and the season four finale's alien invasion introduced the Justice League to this series Batman.

The Batman season five picks up with Gotham reeling in the aftermath of the alien attack. The series changed in this fifth and final season with the show becoming more of a team-up series, which isn’t a bad thing per se; however, of the show's thirteen episodes I can count on one hand how many episodes weren’t a team-up and have digits left over. I enjoyed this season, however when the team-ups occur, the spotlight is taken off Batman and placed on the guest stars; if this was an actual team-up series that’s fine, but the name of the show is The Batman and it should focus on him. However the two part season finale was a team-up with the entire Justice League and was a good way to end the season/series.

Season five is still a good season, but it’s not as strong as seasons three and four when it was really firing on all cylinders. This is the last season of The Batman, but Batman will be back in a new series on the Cartoon Network – Batman: The Brave and The Bold, taking its name from a comic of the same name. This book was a team-up book and this series will be no different. Every episode will feature Batman teaming up with a different DC Universe character, and not just “A-list” heroes, but fan favorites and some obscure characters as well.

There are two featurettes on this set. The first, "The Batman: Justice League Profiles", is a discussion with the production staff as they talk about the characters of Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Hawkman; here they discuss their takes on the individual characters and how they would work them into the show.

The second, "Joining Forces: The Batman's Legendary Team-Ups", continues with the first featurette's Justice League theme and this time the staff talks about the decision concerning the direction that season five took. They discuss how the show's dynamic was changed with the introduction of the Justice League to the series.

While it can’t compare to Batman: The Animated Series, The Batman has a unique take on it and is very family friendly; in fact it’s one of the shows my nine-year-old and I watched every week and we will miss it. But with a new Batman series coming this fall I won’t be missing Batman for long.
