DVD Review: Reno 911! The Complete Fifth Season Uncensored
Published July 24, 2008
Reno 911! is famous for its very extended ‘extended scenes.’ Since the show is largely improvised each extended scene could go on for ten or fifteen minutes with the actors saying whatever pops into their heads until they have enough footage to cut down and make a regular scene out of. Some of the extended scenes get a little boring after a while, because you’ve almost spent as much time watching one continuous scene, as you would have watching a regular episode. But some of them are gems. The extended scene with Jackie the prostitute, a recurring character who has been around from the first season, is definitely worth watching.
My favorite extra contained in this set is called “Cop Psychology: Inside the Minds of Reno’s Deputies.” After you’ve watched a few episodes of this show you’ll realize that being inside these people’s mind is the last place you’d want to be, but you can’t help but wonder what they are thinking half the time. In this extra a state psychologist is sent in to give each deputy an evaluation by asking them certain questions. Each deputy has about three to five minutes with the psychologist, although Deputy Wiegel takes just a little longer, as is expected. All I can say is I’m glad real cops aren’t as messed up as these people; at least I really hope they aren’t.
Long time fans of the show will love to pick up this set. It is everything that Reno 911! fans love. If you haven’t been introduced to the show, I would first suggest watching it on TV because all those “bleeps” you hear on the TV are not bleeped out on the DVD. Just remember that Reno 911! is definitely not fun for all ages. The DVDs are truly meant for mature audiences.
I hope Reno 911! stays around for a long time to come, although at the pace these deputies are going, I’m not sure if there will be much of Reno left.
