New Album Releases 07/22/08: U2, David Bowie, Miley Cyrus, Nine Inch Nails, Paul Weller, Black Sabbath, CSNY, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Fred Frith & More
Published July 22, 2008
Someone at the labels must have been listening to all the pissing and moaning we've been doing here all year about the lack of new releases each week. Because holy crap, there is a lot to write about this time around.
Not all of it is really what you would call "new" however. In fact, reissues and previously unreleased material from what you might call "classic" acts account for a pretty fair sized chunk of what you'll find in stores this week. So we'll get those out of the way first.
First up, we have the new expanded reissues of U2's groundbreaking first three albums for Island, Boy, October, and War. Each of these brand spanking new editions are double discs which, in addition to the remastered versions of the original albums, feature an additional disc crammed with all of the B-sides, remixes, and otherwise rare or hard to find material that you'd expect.
Next, David Bowie's famous Live in Santa Monica '72 concert with the old Spiders from Mars band of Ziggy Stardust fame finally sees the light of official release. Donald Gibson wrote an excellent review of this formerly famous bootleg earlier this week, which we urge you to check out.
The Ronnie James Dio years of Black Sabbath are boxed up on the five-disc set The Rules of Hell. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young offer a preview of their concert film from 2006's Freedom Of Speech tour (in theatres July 25) on Déjà Vu Live. Former Jam and Style Council frontman Paul Weller has an ambitious new double solo CD out called 22 Dreams.
As far as the new stuff that is actually, you know, "new" goes, Trent Reznor's second Nine Inch Nails release this year, The Slip, sees physical release in stores this week following its MP3 download release earlier this year. Unlike the instrumental Ghosts I - IV however, this one is said to be a more traditional NiN record, featuring the sort of harder textures that Reznor fans have come to love and expect.
Lastly, we had originally promised Tom Johnson we would let him write about Miley Cyrus' new Hannah Montana-less CD Breakout, but at the risk of breaking his "Achy Breaky Heart" simply couldn't allow it. Instead, Tom covers Penguin Cafe Orchestra below. But first, here's Mark Saleski to talk about one of those oddball guitar things he enjoys so much...
It must be the time of year. It must be the heat. Or the humidity. Whatever the reason, I have a big hankering for some off-kilter music. Now that I think about it, I always have a hankering for that stuff. It's just that sometimes the feeling goes from a vague sense of desire to a raging need. If logic is involved, I'm totally unaware of it.
So here comes oddball guitar man Fred Frith with To Sail, To Sail, a solo acoustic tribute to some of his biggest influences including Robbie Basho, Davy Graham, and Barre Philips. What's really cool about releases like this is the new set of possibilities that is presented. I mean, I don't know who Camel Zekri or Robbie Basho are but if they're big in Frith's mind, it would be silly to not check them out.

Man there is a lot this week. I really like the Buddy Guy record and I'm very impressed with the remastering job done on the U2 releases. The added material is a bit weak in spots, but the sound of the original albums is fantastic. I'm also pretty impressed with NIN's The Slip. I've never been a NIN fan, but I like the instrumental record from earlier this year and am surprised at how much of Slip I like.
I'm looking forward to that Bowie set (my Amazon order should arrive tomorrow).
I hear that Miley Cyrus is finally speaking out about those Vanity Fair photos. I guess she's upset?
Just a programming note, in case someone's looking to pick up that Paul Weller: the US is not getting the two-disc version. That was a very limited run in the UK. It's a "double album" type thing, but it still fits on one disc.
NIN is limited and numbered, so if you want a low one, go get it. 250,000 is a dubiously high number for a limited edition. Yeah, it's technically limited, but really, how many copies was this going to sell? Oh wait! It comes with stickers, guys!
