Book Review: Divorcing Dwayne by J. L. Miles
Published July 04, 2008
No one could have prepared Francine Harper for all of the ups and downs and twists and turns her life would take when the “honeymoon ended” during her second year of marriage. And as a result of all the turmoil, nothing would ever be the same in Pickville Springs, the sleepy rural town in northern Georgia where Francine and her husband Dwayne called home. Prior to all hell breaking loose, Dwayne and his hillbilly bluegrass band the Rocky Bottom River Boys were the local celebrities. Things began to change the night Francine walked into the Dirty Foot Saloon (a neighborhood watering hole where the group regularly performed, which also happened to be owned by Dwayne’s first wife, Sheila) and caught her husband intimately involved with his ex-girlfriend Carla, an exotic dancer at the Peel-N-Squeal. Let's just say Dwayne was busy playing more than his fiddle that night. Right then and there things really snowballed out of control.
Divorcing Dwayne has it all. Its pages are filled with romance, drama, suspense and loads of laughter. J.L. Miles weaves this modern day tall-tale with a perfect blend of wit, absurdity and good ol' southern charm. Her characters come to life with mutidimensional and rich vibrant personalities.
Francine has spunk. While naive and honest to a fault, she's not taking life sitting down. Nor is she letting Dwayne sweet talk his way out of his two-timing shenanigans. As Francine attempts to deal with her situation, she gets involved in many risky and off the wall capers. In the process she also becomes a national role model for women. Supporting her every step of the way is her best friend and partner in crime, Ray Anne Pickles. Their antics are outrageously hilarious. The two met and bonded in first grade and have been inseparable ever since. Their relationship truly defines what a long lasting friendship is all about. Francine's grandma, Nanny Lou, adds an endearing spark to the story. She is definitely a force to be reckoned with and brings a delightful element to this interesting mix of personas.
I enjoyed this novel and didn't want it to end. Fortunately there's more to come. Divorcing Dwayne is the first of a three-part series. I'm looking forward to following Francine's follies in Dear Dwayne and Dating Dwayne. I can't wait to read what J.L. Miles has in store for her next.
