Food Review: Club Gourmet

The Zone Diet is so last week. The new kid on the block? Club Gourmet.

Club Gourmet is an all organic, all gourmet diet plan. Each morning, a cooler with a day's worth of food (breakfast, lunch, savory snack, dinner, and sweet snack) is delivered to your porch. All the food is freshly prepared, using organic and locally grown food. They guarantee you will not get the same meal in any given one-month period. And all food comes in biodegradable corn resin containers that literally melt away in 60 to 80 days. And not only is the food tasty, but each menu is designed for optimal nutrition. You will lose weight and get healthy in the process.

I got a chance to try a day's worth of food.

Breakfast: Breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, adzuki beans, and tomato salsa in a spelt tortilla - This was flavorful, but unlike most burritos, there wasn't too much "stuff" in it. Enough ingredients to feel like you are having a full meal and make it flavorful, but not overwhelming to the palette.

Lunch: Chopped Cobb salad with grilled chicken breast, corn, and avocado - The dressing for this salad - some kind of olive oil vinaigrette - was awful. It was too bitter, so I swapped it out for some organic Ranch dressing in my fridge. Not very healthy, I know. The grilled chicken was delicious though - juicy and lean, and the veggies were fresh and crisp.

Savory Snack: Heirloom cauliflower with coriander seeds and jalapeno gouda - Inedible. I took one bite and was horrified. I spit it out and threw away the entire thing. I don't know if it was the mixture of seasonings or if I just hate cauliflower. But I could not eat this.

Dinner: Braised organic salmon with spring root vegetables and natural jus - The salmon had a wonderful, flaky texture, but was a little bland. I wasn't a fan of the "root vegetables," which were carrots and something white that wasn't onion. They were mushy.

Sweet Snack: "Creamy" fresh cherry and cocoa nib soup - a creamy soup with no cream (maybe non-fat milk?), this had whole, pitted fresh cherries and raw cocoa nibs floating in it. Definitely my favorite dish of the day. It was light, sweet, and refreshing. The cocoa nibs gave a delicate chocolate hint, but were not particularly tasty eaten raw (cocoa is nothing without sugar).

I am an extremely picky eater, so I was concerned that I would get a cooler full of things I didn't like. But the intro paperwork asks you to list your allergies, as well as likes and dislikes, and they follow it to a T. Each dish includes preparation instructions, which is perfect for a cooking dunce such as myself.

The downsides? Currently, the service is only available in the Los Angeles area. The price will also be prohibitive to most people. Though they have long-term programs that include discounts, for a full day's worth of food you are looking at about $80 per person. And because the food is prepared fresh in small batches, they can only accommodate a "small number of clients," so you have to tell them why you want to join. But if these negatives don't dissuade you, give it a try. The food is tasty, and very unique.

Sounds like a lot of work to me. Wouldn't it be easier to assemble this menu on your own?

The other thought that came to mind was that this is a LOT of food. I don't eat this much in one day. When I do eat, I want my palette to be overjoyed and stimulated with tasty morsels, not flattened down by "gourmet" cardboard.

I hate having to struggle with the fifteen pounds I want to lose, but I think I'll continue to press on alone.

A lot of work...? It is all pre-packaged. You just heat and eat.

All the portions are small. I'm not sure what you mean by "gourmet" cardboard
