2008 Summer Movie Preview: July

June ended with bang with monster box office openings for WALL-E and Wanted.  July’s first big movie out of the gate, Hancock, hopes to continue that trend…will the summer box office love continue?

Hancock-Will Smith Jason Bateman befriend the beleaguered crime fighter. Wife, played by Charlize Theron and son. 

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl-Abigail Breslin (Ultimate Gift) headlines the inspiring drama of a nine year old girl growing up in the early years of the Great Depression. Executive produced by Julia Roberts. (currently expanding to wide release)

The Wackness-Drugs, music, and romance all mix into this urban drama starring Ben Kingsley, Josh Peck, Famke Janssen, Method Man and Mary-Kate Olsen. Unfortunately, current word of mouth has focused on spats between stars. (limited release)

JULY 11

August-Set in August 2001, the star filled drama (Josh Harnett, Naomie Harris, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Rip Torn, Robin Tunney and David Bowie) centers on two brothers fighting for their business. (NY)

Hellboy II: The Golden Army-These comic book heroes expand their heroics (and possibly their fan base) as they battle unique creatures trying to overrun the Earth. 

Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D-Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson (“Bridge to Terabithia“) star in this classic sci-fi adventure remake.

Meet Dave-Eddie Murphy stars in this PG rated comedy about miniature aliens try to save the earth with their incognito ship that operates as a human.

JULY 18

The Dark Knight-The must-see movie of the summer! Christian Bale is back as Batman with the now deceased Heath Ledger as the Joker and Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent. Also coming to IMAX theaters. 

Mamma Mia!-Pierce Brosnan, Meryl Streep, and Colin Firth star in this Broadway musical adaptation.

Space Chimps-Primates with opposite personalities conquer the outer atmosphere in this animated comedy featuring the voices of Jeff Daniels, Patrick Warburton and current SNL comedians Andy Samberg and Kenan Thompson.

JULY 25

American Teen- This in-depth documentary is set in an Indiana high school and is directed by Nanette Burstein The Kid Stays in the Picture). (limited release)

Brideshead Revisited-Emma Thompson, Matthew Goode and Michael Gambon star in this popular book adaptation set during World War II  (limited release)

Step Brothers-Will Farrell looks to rebound from his box office slump with his Talladega Nights co-star John C. Reilly in this R-rated comedy. Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) co-star as the merging parents.

X Files: I Want to Believe-Based on the television series and continuing from the previous 1998 film, the extraterrestrial investigative team of Mulder and Scully hit the big screen again.
