PS2 Review: Buzz! The Hollywood Quiz

For fans of the hugely popular Scene-It board games, Buzz! The Hollywood Quiz offers a solid alternative. Everyone has their own controller and the game's pacing and variety is better. However, compared to the competition on other consoles, such as Scene-It on the Xbox 360, Buzz! feels a little flat.

Compared to the previous general trivia Buzz! title, the focus of this movie centric title makes it appealing to those with a pop-culture knowledge base. Loaded with movie clips and photos, The Hollywood Quiz is presented better, except for the aggravating host who never has new introductions, making his lines repetitive when playing multiple times.

The controllers contained inside one of the worst plastic "hand cutter" packages you'll ever deal with are light, cheap, and far too easy to get tangled. All four controllers connect to one port, and there's no way to disassemble them if you have less than four players (or eight with two sets). As with the prior Buzz! title, the game makes limited use of the giant red button on the top, which seems tailor made for quick action trivia.

Hollywood Quiz nicely uses its licenses. Character selection offers a number of familiar faces, including the Creature from the Black Lagoon and a number of other generic selections. Game types are varied, easily setting up quick play or longer games. There's also a more challenging mode for movie scholars allowing for tougher, more in-depth questions.

Graphically, there's nothing spectacular here. Most of the assets are recycled, though the video clips offer a nice visual boost to draw players into the film stylings of this specific release.

The various game rounds are typical game show types, including the intense point stealer round and solid final countdown to finish each match. Stuff such as the pie fight gives the title an amateurish feel, reaching for laughs. A way to select and customize which round types you'll play would be welcome.

Where Buzz! fails is that this is purely a minor makeover. Undoubtedly, a line-up of Buzz! titles will line the shelves with only the types of questions changing with each release. Scene-It on the 360 offers far more variety, bigger question base, higher quality production values, and infinitely more convenient means of control.

For those that haven't made the step up to the next-gen consoles however, Buzz! does offer a faster, easier experience compared to the board game version of Scene-It. This is hardly a flawless product, but for a casual game night with a group of movie-inclined trivia buff, this can fit your needs.

Buzz! The Hollywood Quiz is rated T (Teen) by the ESRB for Crude Humor, Drug Reference, Mild Language, Mild Violence, Suggestive Themes.
