Product Reviews: Sudoku and Kakuro Electronic Handhelds
Published June 23, 2008
The Kakuro handheld is about twice the size of its Sudoku counterpart. It comes with two AAA batteries. Instead of a stylus, you use a number pad to input your answers. At around $9.95, it's not too surprising that compared to the Sudoku handheld this feels a bit more cheaply made, almost disposable. Still, with this device boasting an amazing one million puzzles, it's not something you'd throw away any time soon. Interestingly, it comes with an alarm clock function, though I can't see too many people using their Kakuro handheld to get up in the morning.
Game play on the Kakuro handheld is as smooth as in the Sudoku one. There are also three levels of difficulty, and if you're stuck on a puzzle you can use the Hint option. Naturally there's also a Clear function for errors, and if you've finally given up press the Solve button for the answers.
Both the Sudoku and Kakuro handhelds are inexpensive replacements to those booklets that you find at airports, bookstores, and grocery stores. You'll never have to buy another book again, worry about finding a writing utensil, or frown at all the smudge marks caused by constant erasures. However, if by some chance you already own a Nintendo DS or a PSP, then you don't need to buy either since both games are available for those handheld consoles at reasonable prices.
