New Movies and Box Office Predictions: Get Smart, The Love Guru

Last week The Incredible Hulk smashed its way past Kung Fu Panda to claim the top spot. Will it have the strength to hold off the oncoming forces of Mike Meyers and Steve Carell? Probably not, although it should still fare fairly well. Now, who would have thought that that in a weekend featuring Myers and a spy spoof that they would not be the same movie? Yeah, I was slightly amused by that as well. Anyway, this week has two comedies entering the fray, both of which should offer at least a couple of laughs and get families in the theaters.

Get Smart. (2008, 110 minutes, PG-13, comedy, trailer) Back in the 1960's there was a television show created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry that starred Don Adams as a hapless spy battling the forces of KAOS. Now we have a feature film about that very same thing, only starring Steve Carell. Honestly, who else could have played this part? That's right, no one. Carell, as Smart, gets promoted to agent status when the majority of CONTROL's agents are taken out of the equation simultaneously. This rookie agent has to find out what is going on before it is too late. Co-starring with Carell are Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, and Terrance Stamp.

The Love Guru. (2008, 88 minutes, PG-13, comedy, trailer) Would you believe it has been five years since Mike Myers was seen (not just heard) on the big screen? The Love Guru is Myers' first live action film since the abysmal Cat in the Hat, I am sure that he hopes that most have forgotten about that. Anyway, this movie does not look good at all. It like the uber-annoying cousin to Austin Powers (which I like). Myers is the Guru Pitka, raised in India but returning to America to ply his trade. He is faced with helping a hockey player reconcile with his wife. Co-starring are Jessica Alba, Verne Troyer, Romany Malco, and Justin Timberlake.

Bigger, Stronger, Faster*. (2008, 105 minutes, PG-13, documentary, trailer) This documentary opened up a few weeks back in limited release and this week it has found its way to one theater in my area. It takes a look at the steroids sports issues, American ethics, and other issues surrounding the controversy. I have heard good things about the film and hope to get in to see it during its limited one-week run here.

Also opening this week, but not near me:

  • Brick Lane
  • Kit Kittredge: An American Girl

Box Office Predictions
The past few weeks have offered up such heavy hitters as The Incredible Hulk, Kung Fu Panda, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Iron Man. This weekend doesn't have anything near that box office potential. Instead it has a pair of comedies that target the same general demographic, so expect them to eat each other a little bit and end up with respectable and not mind-blowing final tallies. At least that is how I am reading it. The Steve Carell comedy should win the top spot easily as Hulk moves into its second weekend. What will be more interesting is the battle for third that will play out between The Love Guru and Kung Fu Panda.

Here is how I think the top ten field will play out:

RankTitleBox Office
1Get Smart$38 million
2The Incredible Hulk$28 million
3The Love Guru$21 million
4Kung Fu Panda$18 million
5The Happening$16 million
6You Don't Mess with the Zohan$9 million
7Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull$8.5 million
8Sex and the City$4.5 million
9Iron Man$3.5 million
10The Strangers$1.5 million
