Book Review: The Giving Myths - Giving Then Getting the Life You've Always Wanted by Stephen B. McSwain
Published June 03, 2008
Now his message is available in The Giving Myths. In this book, McSwain first sets up his theory of generosity, then challenges the myths of giving that many people and pastors continue to believe. Most of these myths were ideas that I had grown up with, such as the more you give, the more you get. McSwain exposes these misinterpretations and instead sets up the true meaning of giving that Jesus exemplified.
McSwain not only uses a lot of historical and literary examples to present his ideas, but he also adds some very personal examples from his own mistakes and successes. Because of this, I didn’t feel like McSwain was looking down on me from some pedestal and pointing out my every short coming. In fact, he says that this book is merely his theory of giving. Take it or leave it.
Altogether, The Giving Myths is extremely encouraging. McSwain put together a book that makes me want to give, apart from guilt or obligation. I think every pastor should read this book before preaching another sermon on giving. Many of them will find McSwain has a very different, but well-founded, view of important church issues, such as the tithe.
This book is also a great source for those just generally looking at their finances and how they want to handle their money. I’ve taken Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace, and like that course, McSwain shows that giving is an important part of a budget.
So next time you’re faced with a decision to give or hoard your money, pick up The Giving Myths by Stephen B. McSwain. By putting his suggestions into practice, giving will become a source of joy instead of regret, providing you with a greater opportunity to help those around you.
