Movie Review: Sex And The City

Yes, I am proudly the last virgin on the Sex And The City block. Why? Because I never saw even one episode of that wildly popular HBO sitcom set in New York City. So, what’s the attraction now? Two things piqued my interest: good movie press and its autobiographical base. A little research on the net described the book (Sex And The City) and the series as a thinly veiled dating memoir by a real woman, Candace Bushnell.

She did not create the title of the newspaper series-cum-book-cum-TV series-cum movie, but she did the writing. And it was all about the New York pursuit of "love and labels." Somewhere along the way she made Manolo Blahnik shoes every woman’s must-have guilty accessory. The shoes, the fashion, and "the look” along with the sexual escapades of Carrie and her three BFFs in the Big Apple roll together the same spicy ingredients in the movie.

This Sex And The City film, however, is pure fiction and nasty fun by writer/director Michael Patrick King, winning its first weekend box office at 55.7 million dollars (released May 30), thereby proving the staying power of the story. I loved it. Sex was like a mélange of Devil meets Stella — two romantic comedies rolled into one that rocked some right love notes.

The plot is no secret. Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, finally gets married to Mr. Big (Chris Noth). This is what the movie is all about. The subtext? Happy endings and provocative emotions. Can a material girl find real love in a big city with the right man? After the Big proposal he and Carrie opt for a simple wedding to complement their eye-popping new apartment which, while a little above their price point, captivates both instantly.

She tells her girlfriends over dinner and begins immediately planning her wedding around a non-label vintage, two-piece ivory suit, so un-Carrie like. But you knew Sex couldn’t be that easy. Thus the film takes off — launching itself into Fashion Week and Carrie at the center of a Vogue piece. She balks but later consents to be the over-forty bride.

The wedding also spins out of control, and without giving away too much, sees the women off to Mexico and beach-beautiful scenery. Two of the women need to get away from life. And as every girl knows who has to mend a broken heart — memory is the enemy.

I like manly men. If a man told me he knew the ins and outs of Sex and the City I would punch him in the face before running in the opposite direction from his candy ass.

Huh? Candace is a woman, but the man wrote the script. No biggie.
