TV Review: Supernatural - "No Rest For The Wicked"

Ah, but we’re not done! Kripke must deliver the big “muhahaha” to fans, knowing that he now has to watch his back at all times while in public for the next several months. I never thought we would get a glimpse of Hell (or as many have speculated, not quite Hell) because I didn’t think the budget allowed it. Dean, in chains, in peril, for all eternity, or at least for all summer. I feel it coming on again. DAMN YOU, KRIPKE!
I’m Left With Incoherent Thoughts
Did I mention that this episode was directed by the always fantastic Kim Manners? I noticed in the very first scene with the close-up shots of those pretty faces. What’s great about his episodes is that they are consistent and each scene flows seamlessly. He manages to bring out the most emotion and tell the story effectively by just taking the right angle and bringing out the best these two actors have to offer (which is a lot). Emotional episodes are his forte and once again, he delivered in a spectacular way.
I noticed one more piece of continuity, this time coming from often forgotten “Nightmare” from season one. Sam got out of the closet in that episode because he saw Dean die in a vision and “a freak adrenaline thing” took over, aka telekinesis. The same thing happened here. He saw Dean die (this time sadly for real) and those abilities kicked in, saving him from Lilith. Someday, I’d like to see what could happen if he actually controlled those powers. I suspect that control is going to be the key to getting Dean back.
Ruby told Sam, “You don’t like being different. You hate the way Dean looks at you sometimes, like you’re some sort of sideshow freak.” Notice how Sam didn’t protest, not even with those brooding eyes. Dean tells him not to buy into what’s she’s saying, but he is. He’s desperate, and imagine what’s going to happen when Dean’s not there to keep him in check. Kripke made it known that ever since John made the deal for Dean, it’s been a bad chain of events that keeps getting them into deeper trouble. Dean wants to put an end to this madness but we know Sam is too obsessed and stubborn. He’ll forget everything his brother told him once grief tears him apart. The possibilities for character tests in season four are now wide open.
Here’s a burning question for debate all summer. Is Sam Winchester the anti-Christ? Dean saw what Bobby calls “hell’s bitches”. Since he saw Sam as one, could we argue that he really saw demon Sam and not a hallucination? I’m sure a few of you are going “uh duh!” considering he was able to overcome Lilith, but what got me was how Dean didn’t deny or ignore Sam’s power this time, especially when Ruby brought them up. He instead warned Sam not to give into it. I’m sure this is not the last we’ve heard of the anti-Christ thing.

Kudos to both Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. Amazing job, fellas. You embody your characters, and you both are so underappreciated by everyone except us fans.

Though I still wonder if the reason why Dean flinched after seeing Ruby was not because he saw a demon, but because he didn't. Ruby already admitted that she's different from most demons, so maybe that's what he saw, or rather didn't see.

I was shaking for nearly an hour after the episode ended - this episode reduced me to a quivering wreck - and I STILL love the show.

Damn you, Kripke! He killed Dean! He killed our DEAN!!!!!!!!!! I was so in shock at the end of the episode that I didn't cry until 30 minutes after it was over. Full body heaving crying! My heart aches and it is broken. Watching that final gut-wrenching scene brings to mind Sartre's book 'No Exit'. His idea of Hell is a person's own worst fear. Dean, being alone..without Sam...is his own worst fear personafied.

The finale was awesome. It hit me hard and I still feel sad about it. And I fear that I will feel so all summer and probably the first episodes of season 4 cause Dean just can't jump out of hell that easily. We will see a desparate Sam. As far as Sam being the anti-christ is concerned, it's canon that he is not a demon. Remember in crossroads the guy saw his wife's face all messed up and demonic? And she was not a demon. It's just a symptom of imminent death via hellhounds. Bobby even said so this episode.

I was in the same situation as you, my first live season finale with a long turtoring summer! I was a wreck before the season finale because there wouldn't be a fresh SPN for months. I knew I would feel desperate, sad and had no idea how I would survive the weeks without my Winchester boys. Then the finale aired and I was ..... okay.
I, the really hardcore SPN fan, was fine and my friend who I infected with the SPN virus was worrying how she would survive the summer. It was hilarious.
All I could think throughout watching the episode was DAMN YOU KRIPKE, THAT'S AWESOME or YOU BASTARD, THAT'S SO GREAT!!!!
I mean I loved the Kansas song (no, you cannot play it too often), Dean's dream, Dean's yoda comment, Dean's fight with Ruby (now I'm ready to love hating her), Sam's Eye of the Tiger comment, the Bon Jovi song (I thought I was in parallel universe because how can BJ be on SPN?!) etc. and the one thing which will let me survive the summer and doesn't make me sad about Dean's death is KRIPKE SHOWING ME DEAN IN HELL AFTER THE BASTARD SAID THAT WE WOULD NEVER GONNA SEE HELL BECAUSE IT'S SIMPLY TOO EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!

This episode was the best episode since Jus in Bello and I love Jus in Bello. I hate/ love cliff-hanger.. Supernatural has the BEST cliff hanger ever in the history of cliff hanger! Master Kripke, you've done it again! Kripke for President! Jensen for Best Actor! Supernatural for Best Drama.. Jarad for Best Actor as well! My young teenage son and I (significantly older) both love this show. It is simply really good entertainment and story telling. The story, acting, filming, directing, everything - it is the best show I have seen on television. I really like that along side the monsters and scares that the story about family love comes forward and front line. Being a mother of two sons in this day and age - you have to teach your kids the importance of family - just like Dean taught Sam. And to recognize and appreciate the Bobbie's in your life too - family doesn't end with blood. Kripke, Ackles, and Padalecki are amazing and I wish them health and success.
I add myself to the list that yelled at the TV when Dean was shown in pain as the last scene. Damn you Kripke!

My daughter & I have been speculating how season 4 will get Dean out of hell. We're watching the other seasons plus the reruns. I've watched the finale so many times & I still can't believe that Dean is in Hell (although I knew it would happen). I was so hyped up after the original airing...Whoo! Man, I haven't been this hooked on a show since "MacGyver". (Oops. Did I say that out loud?) My daughter has developed a crush on Bobby (he's so cool, she says & I agree).

"What am I supposed to do?": This is the question Sam asks Dean just minutes before everything is over. It is exactly the same question, Dean addressed to Sam's dead body at Season 2 Finale (actually twice). Dean never got an answer to his question, unlike Sam. Dean replied to his brother's despair, but still Sam wouldn't follow his advice. The two brothers are still each other's weak spot.
And something else: I don't think Sam ignored Dean when he summoned Ruby. I believe the two brothers made this plan, so Dean could grab the knife. After having trapped Ruby, Sam didn't seem surprised or annoyed with Dean's interference. On the contrary, they were talking as if they both knew what Dean had intended to do.
