Theater Review (NYC): Armor of Wills

The most charming moment of this play comes after the curtain call when Harrison Williams steps forward to thank the audience for coming to the show and mentions information we can find in our programs. He is enthusiastic and captivating.

The production itself is the opposite. Although the work is presented with gusto, and the audience, including the director, is supportive in its laughter, there is no focus in the writing, directing, or acting.

The play tells the story of Kalib, who is caught between life and death, and the journey he takes back to the land of the living. But we don't know this until about halfway through, so not only are we watching poor storytelling, we are lost in its undergrowth. Kalib is buffeted back and forth between his mother, his fiancee, and his stepfather, all of whom, we learn far too late, are dead. Why these people are fighting over him remains a mystery when it shouldn't.

The actors are allowed such latitude with shtick that the production borders on farce. They run wild with affectation in the not-so-good sense – grimacing, limp wrists, sauntering, and, in the case of Harrison Williams, a ballet of fingers that rivals Edward Scissorhands. Josh Krebs shines through as a sturdy actor who knows what he is doing. Brian Morgan has moments of clarity but is hampered by the text that gives him nothing onto which he can latch.

The Beggars Group is one of those companies that love theater, and for that we should be grateful. They just need to examine the quality of their work a little closer to make certain that it is of a standard as high as their commitment. This production is not.
