Book Review: Flight by Vanna Bonta
Published May 06, 2008
In Flight, Vanna Bonta has written a novel within a novel that will captivate readers with a story of inter-dimensional space travel. This story may be science fiction, but there are some common thematic threads (love, loss and dependence) that are relevant regardless of what dimension you are from.
In the main story, the character Mendle creates the protagonist Aira for his novel; he is shocked when she magically comes to life. What ensues is enlightenment for those around her and a romantic journey that embraces the hearts of readers.
Flight weaves fantasy with a touch of everyday reality. For example, I enjoyed the conceit that even inter-dimensional travelers have pets. Aira has a loyal miniature dragon named Onx, who has the traits of a dog with both the devotion and the ability to pout. Then there is Mendle's ex-girlfriend, who thinks he is crazy, and starts snooping into his activities; what she discovers will keep the reader engrossed to the last page. If you like science fiction, mystery, drama, or love stories, you will enjoy this book. Quantum physics has always fascinated me, and having an opportunity to travel to other dimensions via a novel was fun. It's better than watching a movie; reading gives a more intimate feel to the experience. The author's vivid imagination and her skilful use of language will grab the reader's attention and grip them for hours.
Bonta includes a glossary of definitions to aid the reader in understanding certain word choices and there is also a copy of handwritten notes. Readers will feel part of the story, and will hate to see it end. You don't have to be a fan of science fiction to read this book, it's a cross-genre novel that everyone will enjoy.
