How She Move is a new DVD release from Paramount Vintage of a theatrical release from earlier this year directed by Ian Iqbal Rashid. The movie tells the story of a young woman and her family’s struggle to deal with the loss of one of their own, the eldest daughter to be exact.

She dies as the result of a drug addiction, and this sets a series of events in motion, one of those being the youngest daughter having to give up her private school education and return home to live with her family and attend public school. The young woman is determined to make it back to her education because she has goals in mind. She hopes to attend medical school someday.

At first, she sees the only way of making it back to private school is a scholarship. She studies for that exam, and thinking she has failed it she must come up with another plan. This leads her to her dancing ability. This ability is something she has shared in common with her deceased sister, and she decides she must somehow enter a dance competition called Step Monster, in which teams step dance for a $50,000 prize. Her journey is shown throughout the movie. She bounces from team to team, and we see her determination in trying to better herself and her situation. We also see how her family copes with the loss it has suffered.

The movie and the plot follow along a fairly stereotypical line that we see in many movies of this type. For me, this made the story easy to follow and fairly predictable. I knew what was coming. The actors in this movie, including the star of the film, Rutina Wesley, are all fairly unknown faces. I didn’t recognize any from previous works. They do well enough with the material they are given here, but the movie is quite forgettable with the dancing the only real highlight for this viewer. The story itself didn’t do much for me because it didn’t add anything to make it stand out against other films in this genre.

How She Move comes to us from MTV films, and this means we have some great music included on the soundtrack. Many popular contemporary artists are featured, including Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes. The best part of this movie is the dance moves. We see several dance sequences in this movie, and they are to be watched. They add to the story being told.

The DVD includes the movie and some additional features that take us behind the scenes of the making of the movie. We see rehearsals and preparation for the dance sequences. This movie shows the story of one woman and what she goes through to pick herself up after such a devastating loss. However, it isn’t one that I will remember for long past this viewing. This is definitely one to add to your rental list.
