What was the point of all that?

When Todd and Toni decide to get married rather hastily (which sets the stage for the two-part "The Wedding" episode at season's end), the craziness reaches a new height when Toni decides to blast Joan for bailing on her the during preparations for the wedding in order to fix her relationship with Ellis after another fight. I understood that dynamic as they are both selfish in their own ways. I didn't understand that particular fight, nor did I see where it was coming from.

Joan needs a man. Toni needs a rich man. They are both needy people. Something of the realist in me sees the irony in their fights about not being there for each other, since they are such good friends that they should know the other's history and realize they both do the same insane things to each other.

For the first couple of years it was cute to see Lynn as a wanderer with no real need to be in a relationship unlike the other three. With the third season it was clear that the audience wanted a change as the character ended up getting a real corporate job and pursuing a career as a documentary filmmaker. It is sad that the production team didn't stick to that.

Lynn does enter into a complicated relationship with a poet (Saul Williams) who wishes to be celibate. They have their issues. Lynn wants to be a freak in bed while her poet boyfriend wishes to wait (the real reason is revealed later in a future season). However they don't engage in the yelling contests that her other friends seem to engage in this season. I would even go on to say that they were the most peaceful couple of the season.

The male "girlfriend" of the pack, William Dent (Reggie Hayes), finds himself leaving his place of employment at the law firm he and Joan both work for due to him being passed up for a partnership. Putting him back on track is his newly acquired and corporate ladder-climbing girlfriend Monica (Keesha Sharp, who would become a cast member in the seventh and eighth seasons as the new fourth girlfriend when Jill Marie Jones left), who often puts him at odds with the other girls by making him think of his career over hanging out with them.
