Walter's guitar playing is definitely not what it used to be. Listen to his work in the songs "FM" and "Josie" - little weird masterworks of seemingly unrelated notes that end up working well together and defining the song when you do a little "memory recall". Now? He's just lazy and has been since SD reunited in 1993. He just noodles along, never really catching fire.

Luckily Jon Herington is on board to at least approximate what the records sound like. He's the next best thing to actually having Larry Carlton in the touring band.

Donald,
Nice review! Your points are very well-stated... I agree that rather than being a band, it's more of a concept that could result in recordings, and sometimes a band, when they feel like it.

I'm a big fan of SD, and I enjoy that the luxurious sheen of their craftmanship hides very cynical (and often humorous) characters and views.

But I just made a very snarky blog post about Walter's guitar playing, which isn't what it used to be, IMO.

Thanks! D
