Grace Potter "Outta My Tree"

The next installment from Grace Potter and the Nocturnal's taping for Sun Studio Sessions is the song "Outta My Tree." Here Grace moves from behind the piano to play a little acoustic guitar showing she is equally adept at both. Speaking of duality, Scott Tournet, lead guitarist extraordinaire, as he did in the Mystery Train clip, once again shows off his masterful harp playing. Meanwhile, the rhythm section, Bryan Dondero and Matt Burr, lay down a nice groove with Bryan moving from electric to old school stand-up bass.

The song showcases the band's strong roots and blues foundation. Although they comfortably stretch themselves a bit from that home base on their most recent release, This Is Somewhere, "Outta My Tree" is right in the Nocturnals' wheelhouse and they hit it right outta the park.   Note the emphasis on "they" as the song also highlights something Grace makes a point of every chance she gets. Despite the name billing, this is very much a band and not a one person show.

Beyond those points, the tune is also emblematic of their entire Session as Grace and crew played mostly songs that haven't been mainstays on the setlist for the band's recent shows. Indeed, I've seen them play a few times in a few different cities across the country the last couple of years and there was only one song from the whole night that I'd heard before. Of course, two were brand new including one written entirely that night. We'll happily share those soon. For now, click below and enjoy....
