Music Review: Tegan and Sara - So Jealous
Published April 08, 2008
One of the things that finally prompted me to pick up my own copy of So Jealous, besides the fact that the friend that let me borrow her copy wanted it back, is that Tegan and Sara on are tour right now. Not only are they on tour but they are only going to be a two hour drive away come May.
I was first introduced to Tegan and Sara thanks to Grey’s Anatomy's first season and their use of “Where Does the Good Go,” which quickly became one of my favorite songs. But the whole album is great. So Jealous is the kind album you stick in your car or player at work and it just doesn’t leave.
The album kicks off with “You Wouldn’t Like Me” and while the opening cords and lines of the song certainly grab you, it’s the last few lines that catch me every time. “I can’t say that I’ll love you forever/ I won’t say that I’ll love you forever.”
“Take Me Anywhere” is a bubbly, happy song that is just a pleasure to listen to. This is the perfect song for that giddy moment you first realize you want to reach out and tell someone, “Take me by the hand and tell me/ You would take me anywhere”
“Where Does the Good Go” of course was used for Grey’s Anatomy and I loved it the first moment I heard it. This is just one of those rare songs that is nothing short of perfect. The emotion in the song reaches out and tugs out the emotion in you. You can’t help but respond. “Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t find me attractive/ Look me in the heart and tell me you won’t go/ Look me in the eye and promise no love’s like our love/ Look me in the heart and unbreak broken, it won’t happen.”
The rest of the album includes “I know, I know, I know” which is another great example of Tegan and Sara at their best. “Downtown” and “Speak Slow” are definitely worth listening to and the title track “So Jealous” is a bit different from the other songs on the album but better for it.
One of the things that I find so appealing about Tegan and Sara are the way their voices blend in the songs. They are so similar in sound and it just comes across as a unique sound. So Jealous is catchy, bright and gets stuck in your head. In short, it is everything a good pop album should be. Even though So Jealous is a few years old now it stands up to time well and I’m sure that it will continue to do so.
