Music Review: No Use For A Name - The Feel Good Record Of The Year

Once “The Feel Good Song Of The Year” came up, I became nervous.  I thought what if this song they have created is not in fact as good as the title?  I took deep breaths and gave the song a listen.  Regretfully, I did not find it the best track on this CD but overall it was an enjoyable track.

A mix of country-rock and punk can be heard on “The Trumpet Player”.  I really enjoyed this track especially with the brief trumpet playing and great guitar solos towards the end.  Another track that grabbed my attention was “Night Of The Living Living”.  The song reminded me of the nineties punk rock music I was so addicted to.

“Ontario” was a track I did not expect to hear on this CD.  It was a slower track with far-fetched singing.  The energy felt through the CD had to be put on hold during this song.  Thankfully “Pacific Standard” quickly brought back the beats and punk rock feeling getting my attention guided in the right direction.

“Kill The Rich” was another one of those songs that had me scratching my head.  It did not sound like something NUFAN would do, but I liked it a lot.  It was a mellow folksy song that I could see The Loves Ones or Gaslight Anthem writing.  I really enjoyed Tony Sly’s singing on this track.

While I cannot sit here and compare this album with any of NUFAN’s previous releases, I can say that they have maintained their sound in this CD and perfected their structure.  All of the songs are solid and well performed.  For a band that had been around for twenty years I am impressed to hear they still have it.  They did not let themselves go and have taken all their past music history and molded it into The Feel Good Record Of The Year.

For a band that has been around the scene this long, NUFAN shows no indication of slowing down what so ever or embarrassing their style.  They are punk rockers with strong quality and continue to generate first-class punk rock.  This is the kind of punk rock I have always appreciated.  It’s not angry or disrespectful but whole hearted and just downright fun to listen to with songs you can almost instantly sing-a-long with.  I skipped no tracks on this CD and actually played it over twice in a row.  I guess you could say I felt good while I listening to it.
