The Ruins. (2008, 97 minutes, R, horror, trailer) I have to say that when I saw the first trailer I was not terribly impressed, but the more I see, which isn't much, I admit that it is growing on me. I am really looking forward to giving this a shot. It would be nice to see an effective horror film hit the big screen. The film follows a group of young adults on a South American vacation who learn the true meaning of terror while exploring some of the local ruins, uncovering something alive. The cast is made up of relative unknowns, the most recognizable being Jena Malone (Into the Wild) and Shawn Ashmore (X-Men 3: The Last Stand). Also in the cast are Jonathan Tucker, Laura Ramsey, and Joe Anderson. The film is directed by first-timer Carter Smith based on a script by Scott B. Smith (Oscar nominee for A Simple Plan), who also penned the novel.

Box Office Predictions

21 pulled out something of a surprise last week as it took the top spot with near $25 million. I believe it is highly unlikely that it will see a second week in that position. I believe the star power of Leatherheads will put it over the top and drive it to the number 1 slot. Nim's Island should also do well, drawing from the family demographic. The rest of the chart is anyone's ballgame, with most likely to do decent business to follow up last week's performances.
