New Movies and Box Office Predictions: Leatherheads, Nim's Island, The Ruins

This weekend brings a variety of new films — family fantasy, sports comedy, and horror. Will any of them be any good? One can only hope. All box office hopes aside, I could care less about how much they make. What truly interests me is the quality. Not everything has to be an Oscar-worthy film, nor does everything need to be "good"; sometimes fun will do. I always look forward to checking out the new offerings, willing to be surprised. Will this week offer any surprises? Time will tell.

Leatherheads. (2008, 114 minutes, PG-13, comedy, trailer) What better way is there to welcome a young baseball season than with a football movie? Sounds like a perfect match. Anyway, this is the latest directorial effort from George Clooney, his first since 2005's Oscar-nominated Good Night and Good Luck. This film is set during the mid 1920s with professional football a struggling proposition looking for respect. Clooney plays a star footballer who, in an effort to gain credibility, lures a top college star and war hero, played by The Office's John Krasinski, to play for his team. Along the way is a female reporter (Renee Zellweger) digging for the truth and the point of a love triangle. I have to say that the trailers look like fun, a funny period piece with top tier star power mixed with some up and coming young blood. I am looking forward to giving it a look see.

Nim's Island. (2008, 95 minutes, PG, comedy, trailer) This family friendly adventure looks like it could provide some magic for the young ones, but seems a bit more questionable of a proposition. The story centers on a young girl named Nim (Abigail Breslin) who lives on a magical island surrounded by all manner of animals where she idolizes a literary adventurer. When her father (300's Gerard Butler) goes missing, Nim finds herself getting help from Alexandra (Jodie Foster), the author of Rover's adventures. I am sure the kids will get a kick out of this one. The film is directed by the duo of Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin.
