Music Review: Matthew Ryan - Matthew Ryan VS Silver State

On Matthew Ryan’s myspace there is a quote which reads “Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years.” And it’s true; it comes through in his music, the sound of his voice. He’s been making music since the 90’s, since before that, and like he says in ‘Jane, I still feel the Same’  “It’s been 4 years, feels like 100.”

Matthew Ryan’s newest release hit the shelves April 1st and Matthew Ryan VS Silver State is one record that you do not want to miss. Before this album I hadn’t heard of Matthew Ryan and now that I have, I’m a fan.

There is just something so appealing about Matthew Ryan. His voice reaches right down and pulls out emotion like it’s the easiest thing in the world to do. This is the kind of music that gets under your skin and it sticks. It sticks in your soul ‘til you just can’t take it anymore. But God, it hurts so good.

The whole album is fantastic (wonderful, brilliant, just insert whatever word you choose) but I do have my favorite songs.

"American Dirt" comes pouring through the ears and goes pounding through your blood. This is great music; this is what music should to be. While the whole song hits you this is my favorite line “Wish I’d done something with my life/ Something safe and so useless.”

"It Could Have Been Worse" is another favorite, lyrics of course being my main focus, I’ve latched on to “You promised her everything/ Not knowing what everything really was/ She’s the first girl you kiss/ She’s the first girl you miss/ When your feeling like this/ Broken in the dark/ Her blonde hair was a setting sun/ Her mascara was born to run.”

You might have heard "Jane I Still Feel the Same" if you are a fan of One Tree Hill, “Jane I still feel the same/ You were a good thing/ You were a good thing/ In a world gone wrong.” As you listen to the song there is just no way that you can deny the beautiful melancholy of Matthew Ryan’s smoky voice.

Great review--I totally agree with all you've said, even to the point of this being the first time I've listened to Matthew Ryan, and now I'm "smitten"! Lyric-wise, I just want to add "They Were Wrong"... the line that runs through my head is "day's never too long, when it's gone, it's gone". So true, and worth remembering!
Thanks!
